Volkswagen's Crimes Help Finance New Electric Buses In Massachusetts - Streetsblog Massachusetts
In 2017, Volkswagen paid $2.9 billion into a nationwide clean air fund as punishment for its scheme to violate and evade U.S. air quality regulations.
ICYMI: βMassachusetts received $75 million from that fund, and in 2025, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) approved a plan to spend nearly two-thirds of that funding on new battery-electric buses for Massachusetts transit agencies.β

Graphic with a dark blue background and the Massachusetts state seal at the top. Large white headline reads: βMassachusetts Public Health and Environmental Protection Commissioners Issue Joint Statement on EPA Endangerment Finding.β Below, a quote states that rolling back the endangerment finding dismantles a key tool to protect public health, and that vehicle pollution is harmful to people, the environment, and the economy. The text also says Massachusetts communities face floods, unpredictable weather, and hot summers, and emphasizes the stateβs strong environmental protections and progress in improving air quality.
Continuation graphic with a dark blue background and the heading: βJoint Statement on EPA Endangerment Finding (cont.).β The text says the Trump Administrationβs decision will disrupt progress on climate change and increase pollution, affecting seniors, children, and people with asthma. It states Massachusetts remains committed to reducing asthma, improving air quality, following science, and protecting residents. At the bottom are gold signatures and names: Bonnie Heiple, Commissioner of Environmental Protection, and Robbie Goldstein, Commissioner of Public Health.
Vehicle pollution is bad for public health. Thatβs a fact.
The Trump Administrationβs decision to roll back the Endangerment Finding is reckless and puts peopleβs lives at risk.
