my modest disagreement is that i think it is important to signal virtue even if, privately, you are a piece of shit. performing decency is an important part of maintaining the norm that decency is part of a well ordered society.
This is what led to book bans targeting Toni Morrison and Maus at the state level. When you threaten people's jobs--or even imprisonment-- they will interpret you as broadly as possible
This isn’t in response to anything in particular except that I’m really enjoying The Corner That Held Them. Something about the Black Death really puts my problems in perspective, yk?
Oh Sylvia Townsend Warner, we’re really in it now
I might be more ok with AI were I not an English teacher and exposed daily to the way it’s undermining an entire generation’s ability to learn how to think complicated thoughts with language, all while making the work of teaching real writing more fraught, tedious, and adversarial!
Bring tissues— I was NOT prepared to turn into a weepy mess!!!

Macbeth voted for Trump unless he was cowed into voting Harris by Lady Macbeth, since she is way into the whole bodily autonomy thing (for herself, at least)

Not only have "learning styles" been debunked, we have to remember that writing is not a learning style or preferred learning mode. It is an essential mode of learning for ALL students and we must ensure that students are consistently engaging with learning through writing.
What it means to have a strong relationship with students is culturally determined and deeply individual. Stakeholders are likely going to disagree on what it looks like in practice. Is it worth explicitly naming what we are aiming for? Or is that too prescriptive? Idk these are my bus thoughts
Just like how teachers need explicit training on how to balance a rubric or how to differentiate instruction, we need to know what is meant by “build relationships”— I suspect that every teacher/admin uses their own definition 📖 #EduSky #IteachEnglish

What about “My Life Had Stood A Loaded Gun” by Emily Dickinson? Something about enacting on harm on behalf of someone/thing you don’t fully understand
I just think we should really consider if we want to move a generation of children away from novels and the experiences and skills and ideas that they contain.
Typos are fine! It’s Sunday and everyone is on autopilot ❤️
Thank you!!!! I will take a look :)
Lowkey amazing to throw a question about teaching into the void, take a nap, and wake up to thoughtful, helpful responses. You guys are all amazing!!! 📖
This is amazing, gosh. How do you shift the class culture to not expect detailed individual feedback, tho?
This is my goal!!!! You are living the sustainable grading dream!
That’s my experience as well! The kids who are ready for feedback will find a time to meet with me and ask questions, and tbh the rest are happy to throw their paper in the trash and move on with their lives 🤷🏻♀️
📖 What’s everyone’s daily essay grading limit? My ability to give detailed feedback flags after 5, but I’d like to get faster.

My word of the day (and personal recommendation) is ‘snerdling’ (18th century): nestling cosily beneath the covers and holding off the day a little longer.
Morning.
