I have many thoughts about it, but I believe his statement was oversimplifying. EN and JP both have tools in their linguistic toolkits that the other language doesn't. East Asian languages' plethora of 1st and 2nd-person pronouns is just one example of this among many. But... 🧵

I wanted to fuse monster genes in MH Stories 2 more often, not just because of the more lenient slot mechanics, but also because I got to see Nargacuga looking perplexed at the end of the process. Just freeze framing instead of continuing the animation. Big grin hours. I clapped every time.

How I look when I'm sitting in silence and someone asks me "what are you thinking"

Feels like a month has passed but no, I just binged an RPG from start to finish the moment I finished writing about another one. Feels good

Replayed Aria and Dawn of Sorrow... while I did not enjoy either as much as I used to, there's still a solid foundation in both that's worth exploring. The emphasis on farming in general rubs me the wrong way, especially locking the final boss behind mandatory farming in both games.

MH Stories 2 cleared just in time for the third game's release. I'm a bit mixed on it, but I think this is going to be fun to write about. It keeps many ideas from the first game, but some are expanded, while others get paved over or trimmed. It's larger, more embellished and a bit more inviting.

I regularly do stuff like this which is why I kinda roll my eyes when someone acts like attacks from offscreen are insurmountable to dodge especially if it's someone who also plays a lot of action games... you can build situational awareness beyond what you see. In fact that's an important lifeskill

Apropos of "nothing," the refrain of "English lacks our pronouns, therefore any loc is compromised" is such a cliched one monolingual Japanese creators trot out when they're disconnected from the process. And as a translator who Gets It, like, it's just not usually a huge creative hurdle day-to-day?

Barring external factors, translation is a job concerned with information conveyance. The lack of identical *mechanics* in your target language does NOT indicate an innate inability to convey the underlying information and its implications, especially when it's rich with imported words and grammar.

This is why I avoid framing translation as a net loss process. It devalues our work and I just don't believe it has to be the case. A superficial loss in grammatical mechanics can be more than offset with gains made through naturalistic, yet authentic writing. You just need sufficient writing chops.

it's "funny" that this article is going to be used by the most annoying people in the world as proof that human translators go too far and should all be replaced by AI when the complaint is specifically about word-for-word translations that don't go far enough
