After a brutal winter, millions of Ukrainians face deepening displacement and uncertainty | UNHCR GENEVA – After surviving the harshest winter in a decade, millions of displaced Ukrainians are confronting a growing crisis marked by hardship and ongoing attacks as peace prospects remain distant.Inside Ukraine, repeated attacks on housing, energy systems and essential services throughout the winter left millions without heating or electricity for prolonged periods. While temperatures are slowly rising, the damage remains. An estimated 10.8 million people inside the country need humanitarian assistance in 2026, and 3.7 million are internally displaced.

It's been four years of Russia's full-scale war on Ukraine.

Four years of destruction, suffering, displacement, uncertainty - and the war continues every day with new air attacks and shelling.

Ukrainians need a just and lasting peace.

War leaves silent threats behind - Ukraine is now 1 of the most mined countries globally.

In 2024, over 15M m² of land were surveyed for mines. Every cleared field is a step toward safety, resilience & economic recovery. #DeminingUkraine

In #Ukraine, older people are often the last to leave their homes in frontline communities. Currently, they make up some 30% of people being evacuated from areas with active hostilities.

A horrible Russian attack yesterday on the city center of Sumy in Ukraine. At least 34 people killed and +100 injured.

Unfortunately, we have seen an intensification of the attacks lately and pattern of large-scale attacks on city centres causing immense civilian casualties & so much destruction.

Localization is vital for UNHCRs humanitarian response, also here in Ukraine, but what does it actually entail? We work closely w/ dedicated & extremely skilled national NGOs (13 of our 14 partners are Ukrainian). And 84% of our procurement is done locally, supporting Ukraine's economy.
