There is a really easy way for DC Prep to improve their teacher retention: let them unionize.

With Bowser AND Bonds declining to run again am I... actually looking forward to an election cycle again?!
Who would've thought.
For DC, this combined with federal workers who are furloughed now needing to access the local food banks, will be devastating

Latinas earn only 51 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men.
This wage gap isn't just unfair, it's an injustice, and Latinas deserve equal pay for equal work.

To Chicago comrades & anyone else facing possible federal occupation:
The National Guard is standing around for photo ops.
DHS, ICE, FBI, DEA, ATF, are working with local police to terrorize & kidnap our neighbors.
Organize accordingly.
Moving our people from a place of fear, anxiety and panic to organized collective action is another kind of success. Thatβs why Iβm so focused on political ed right now. People need tools. They need strategies for mobilization and help asking the right questions.

A beautiful piece of art of farm workers laboring in the fields
Let's give a shout out to the men & women who labor in the fields to put food on our tables. #WeFeedYou #LaborDay.
Mandemosle un saludo a los hombres y mujeres que trabajan en el campo para poner comida en nuestras mesas.
Thank you Ignacio Gomez for letting us use this art
Families, community and educators have been organizing safe passage routes at their schools. But more can always be done. Free DC and Defend DC Education have been doing a lot of coordinating on top of that.
Mayor Muriel Bowser has praised the surge and reserved her criticisms for ICE wearing masks. But tonight at a local school it was MPD who pulled up their gaiter, put on gloves, and approached me masked.
Morning walk on the Anacostia watching a LOT of what appear to be National Guard being bussed in to pick up trash. I guess I prefer this over the military checkpoint harassment zones. But this is ridiculous. All in the name of a creeping fascist occupation. #FreeDC
No reports of them showing up AT schools. All around them? Yes. But no reports of them showing up on the campus itself.
There is no level of perfection you can act that will stop what is coming. What do we need to do? Organize. Build solidarity and community. Continue (or in the case of DC government START) upholding our values in policy and practice. DO NOT COMPLY IN ADVANCE.
DO NOT FEED INTO THE NARRATIVE. I don't care how "well meaning" it may be. DO NOT FEED IT. This is not the young people of DC's fault. Never has been, never will be. This is an authoritarian takeover. The fault is with the fascists who are doing it. Forever and always.
So what we are not going to do is blame DC's young people for Trump's fascism. Fascists always blame the victim for their actions. Always. It can be a real event. It can be fake. It doesn't matter. Fascists will do what they want and justify it however they want. THAT IS FASCISM.
A flyer. The top says, Squash Fascists! They're invasive. The bottom features a line of ICE and other law enforcement with spotted lanternfly wings and spotted lanternflies flying closely above them. A boot with a DC flag on the heel looms above. The bottom says, Grind those f*ckers into the ground!
Made a thing. Was walking with a friend, who stopped in her tracks to squash a spotted lanternfly like a cigarette, and it knocked something loose in my brain.
So sorry for your loss. May their memory be a blessing.
Official DCPS leave of absence request for serving as WTU President.
Wow this mini week has been a true whirlwind. Three days in and weβve already started directly attacking major systemic issues that have gone unadressed for too long. This work will not be easy, but I know we have the team and membership to do it and I am honored to havee this opportunity to lead. β

Wow this first day of my Presidency in the Washington Teachers' Union really got away from me! Busy busy. Here I am heading out with the only decoration I brought in to start. Iβm still me despite it all. π
That classroom was VERY big. People jokingly called it the penthouse.
Laura in her classroom all cleaned out
Cleaned out classroom
My classroom at H.D. Woodson has been cleared out. Keys are turned in. I have been in the new building since it opened (as well as the original Tower of Power and interim building). I have been in 5 different classrooms. It has been real. Canβt wait to visit in my new role. β
I think we are going to have some fun exposing the nonsense that is District Government together now with some real resources behind us.
