You bolt awake in the hills of Burbank. It is 1976 AD. You are Marcia Lucas, and you have changed your mind. The future cannot come to pass. Star Wars must match George's original vision

Let’s talk about Graham Platner’s Big Lie, finally. In 2009, at the height of the Gulf War, the Marines barred him from active duty. Platner claims it was his forearm tattoos. But his one forbidden tattoo was the Nazi symbol on his chest. He knew - and he left the Marines rather than give it up. 1/

Maybe because I have a somewhat scholarly approach to the fieldβ€”I can forgive a lot of BS and bizarre hang-ups from the old guard in return for a few nuggets of insight & theory here & there; as long as current stewards are rooting out old poisons the institutional knowledge is worth it.

There's an *immense* but I think somewhat subliminal/mostly-unplanned pressure in our culture to focus on the new, the current moment, that's all for nostalgia but against living traditions & memory, and I think we need to watch out for that as much as for over-venerating the past.

And reading as a critic is an important literacy skill. Third: it seems usually the people trying to persuade people against reading old books are pretty hot to sell you theirs instead.

Yeah. A few things. First: there's a real tendency in SFF, especially, to occlude marginalized writers so that each generation can be thr first to do a thing. Reading old books helps fix that. Second: a critic, especially, needs to understand the history of literature and its genealogy.

Like playing out antisocial fantasies is one thing. Materially supporting an active Nazi is another.

A game is not a neutral object - they have perspectives and ideology. Clinging to that neutrality will blind you to it and allow you to be a willing participant, or even defender, of those ideologies.

And when the chatbot bubble bursts the kids will still know logic and math.

So here's the thing: as much as I detest chatbots they aren't hard to use. They still follow pretty rigid logic. Instruct a chatbot like a fucking computer and it will mostly respond like a computer. Just teach kids logic and math. They'll be fine with the bots if they, for some reason, have to be

It's all well and good for children to be children. But when they're grown they should become adults with adults pleasures and tastes rather than lingering in the twilight of their childhood.

The 21st century has been the era of the delayed adulthood, the age of the nostalgia franchise. Furthermore it has laid bare the fundamental childishness of reactionary politics.

A thought that occurs: a lot of people rightly point out that Nietzsche's overman is more the figure of the child than the Chad or the cruel brute.

But, here's the thing: I think the 21st century is a resounding repudiation of the figure ofcthe child as an ethical exemplar.

The rest of the world just wants this regime gone. Americans: we really don't care how you fo it as long as there is no path back to government for any of these fascists. And that includes Vance and Rubio.

Not putting anyone on blast but I think it's a bit odd to correlate sophistication with irony. One can enjoy adult pleasures with earnestness and sincerity.

I gotta get around to the "please don't make people speed dial Edward Said" essay for the start - I half-wrote it for the GM guidance in the Daggerheart chapter but that's got to be preface, not buried halfway through chapter 7. (The setting is derived from wuxia and the four classics)

I watched Coonskin and Heavy Traffic at an inappropriately young age. For all its faults, I appreciate Blockbuster's monthly deal for basically being my early cinematic education.

Bakshi's use of rotoscope and diegetic archival footage was just so beautifully experimental too. Like people think of him as that guy who drew tits on cats but he is such a creative wellspring...

And also drew tits on cats.
