Ok so I need recommendations for a graphic novel in the fantasy or horror genre that I could teach in my comic class instead of Season of Mists. Looking for something self-contained, even if it’s part of a series. Preferably by a creative team that is not cis white males.
And I can then have them vote on the book to replace it with sometime in week one or two… yeah that’s a lot better! We can have all the discussion without actually reading the book (and thus making them put money in the pocket of an awful person)
Ok wait a minute. After reviewing my syllabus for this class again, I’m realizing… Season of Mists is the first book we cover post-midterm. So that’s in March. That’s plenty of time to switch the book… so maybe I will have us do this discussion on day one when looking at the syllabus…
I would hope to get pushback! I want them to say “no thanks!” so we can discuss why. My class is already set up so people can bow out of any discussion they want, as long as by the end of the unit they’ve read SOMEthing that they can then apply the exam question to
And then I will take suggestions (from them directly, so they can take ownership of the class and the topics themselves) of graphic novels in the fantasy or horror genres by women or creators from marginalized communities to replace this book when I teach the class next spring
After our thorough discussion on those topics, we’ll transition from fantasy to realism, where we will read & discuss Persepolis and Fun Home, 2 GNs by women from marginalized communities. Hopefully my students will thus be enlightened and educated on these topics in a way they might not have been
So my plan is to cover the text of the GN in 3 days instead of the usual 4 I used to take. On that 4th day we will read the article & discuss it, and sexism in the industry, and death of the author, and when it’s possible to “separate the art from the artist” and when it’s not, and Rowling and Cosby
Season of Mists is on the syllabus for my comic class this semester. Textbook requisitions were due this past fall, shortly before the initial reports started coming in. So it was too late then to change things up, let alone now that we have much more evidence but the class starts in a week.
