Found out this morning that the 3.5m USD grant my team won has been cancelled as a result of cuts to science funding in the US.

NEW: The Minerva Research Initiative, established by the Pentagon to fund social science relevant to national security, is being gutted. Dozens of researchers studying threats from extremist groups, misinformation or climate change have received notices that their grants are being terminated.

AI music generation has gotten, like, scarily good these days. Was listening to an 80βs City Pop playlist on Youtube, liked a song, and tried to search for it only to find out it was 100% AI generated. For creators, these tools must feel like a massive improvement over the Vocaloid days.
Good interdisciplinary work is hard. I just read an ASR paper with a theory section that made me see something in a completely new lightβthen hit the methods section and saw a just... wrong... and completely unvalidated use of LLM embeddings for empirical evidence to support the theory. Ugh.
