Fully coloured digital illustration by Chên King for the charity project Dragon Age Annual calendar. The illustration is themed after the Marseille Tarot card of 'The Sun' and the Dragon Age Origins character Zevran Arainai. There are three tarot cards laid out on a table among other objects like scroll bearing cracked seals from the inquisition and the grey wardens, gold dagger hilts, various gold coins, a journal, a dead crow and a boot to show he is bitting with his feet up on the table. The cards are loosely past - future - present and represent Zevran's journey. The 'past' card shows 3 crow assassins with red blades at night, on top is Taliesin, middle is Zevran and below Rinna. They each have chains at their wrists, a crow mask and Zvran is the only one not bloodied. The background shows an antivan city and Thedas' two moons. The 'present' right card show Zevran fighting the blight alongside the warden, with the horde at the bottom and the archdemon maw at the top ; the backgound shows denerim and kirkwall to retrace his in-game appearances ; there are red daggers pointing at him to show he is still chased by the crows. The middle card the 'present' show him older and free, smiling with a bright gold sun above him. The red cloth, sunflowers and white horse are traditional symbols of 'The Sun' card. He is tossing a coin to symbolize his luck in life and a white winged dagger. I have paid special attention to textures and patterns to emulate the popular Inquisition tarot card style.

This went thru so many color/value revisions, but I had a lot of fun working towards that beautiful card art vibe.

Dragon Age: Inquisition tarot styled piece featuring Gray Warden Duncan from Dragon Age: Origins. With his forehead pressed into his hand and a regretful expression, he is holding a cup that resembles a joining chalice but he is not looking at it. The chalice is tilted down in his grasp, the contents spilling out like a waterfall. Two more chalices are overturned in the background that seems to be melting away. Some thoughts: When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge. You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be. Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history. You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired. Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things.
