I think they’d run their course in their original form and tastes were changing. Acid House and the 'Madchester' (much as I hate the term) sound were just around the corner so the focus was shifting anyway.

The first four albums, I’d agree. S/T just sounds late 80s to me because of the instrumentation/ production and couldn’t have been recorded at any other time.
