If you opt out of facial recognition at the airport, they put you on a big national list of freaks--everyone knows this. But what you might not know is that each TSA airport unit also keeps a local list of opt-outs in the back, where they draw ridiculous caricatures of what they think you look like.

Sociologist Barry Schwartz calls Presidents’ Day “America’s most peculiar holiday.” He also places it among “abortive holidays”—holidays that “refer to the past without instructing or inspiring” or even without indicating what specifically they refer to.

With Latest Rollback, the U.S. Essentially Has No Clean-Car Rules

“The U.S. no longer has emission standards of any meaning,” said Margo T. Oge, who served as the E.P.A.’s top vehicle emissions regulator under three presidents and has since advised both automakers and environmental groups…

“Nothing. Zero,” she added. “Not many countries have zero.”

They want to scare people out of posting ICE-critical content, because they know these posts are turning even their supporters against them. But the better option is to take a page out of their playbook and flood the zone.

Your primary objective as a professor should be to convey how wonder-full your subject is and how much you love it.

Your students might not get the same thrill as you do, but they should recognize that you do get that thrill.

Our subjects are not just true, they're also beautiful.

Statement from Oscar-winning director
Hamdan Ballal:
This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after l returned from Los Angeles-Shem Tov Lusky-again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital.
I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank.
Email me to coordinate your visit:

Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day.
We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky-the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year-came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital.
The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack.

GINA CHRIST: “My name is Gina Christ. And I live in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

I was on my way to work.

There’s people all around my car. I have both hands up on either side of my face — you cannot hear me.

An ICE agent breaks my driver’s side window, glass, reaches in, opens my door, pulls me out of the door, tells me to get on the ground, zip-ties me — and now gas, flashbangs, pepper spray.

There was no need. They detoured to grab me. They could have continued to drive. Their cars were past my car. They passed my car, jumped out of their cars, apprehended me, and kept going.

Once I was detained, it was very like, ‘Do you have water? Are you comfortable? How’s the heat?’ It was a very schizophrenic experience.

I mean, this is insane. This isn’t anything that could minutely be referred to as a couple of bad apples.”

ALIYA RAHMAN: “My name is Aliya Rahman. I was born in Northern Wisconsin, grew up in Bangladesh. I now live in Minneapolis.

I came upon a traffic jam that I pretty quickly realized was ICE.

I was told: ‘Move. I will break your effing window.’ And I couldn’t get a clear answer to where they wanted me to move to.

Very quickly, I was pulled out of that car. I fell twice — once right outside the car, and once behind the car face down.

I am disabled. I am autistic. I have a brain injury. And when I hit that ground face first, I just experienced shooting pain through my neck, through my head. My vision became blurry.

What happened to me in detention was far worse than what happened to me on camera. What happened to me in detention was a complete stripping of my rights.

Nobody knew I was there. I wasn’t told where I was going. I wasn’t given a phone call. And I’m going unconscious and I’m wondering — is this it? They call us bodies. Is this it for me? Am I going to die?

I want to live in a country where people who are enforcing the law treat people humanely.”

GEORGE RETES: “My name is George Retes. I was born and raised here in Ventura, California. I’m 26 years old and I am an Iraq combat veteran.

I was going to work like normal. I show up. ICE is there. There’s kind of like a roadblock. I get out. I identify myself — that I’m a U.S. citizen, that I’m just trying to get to work.

I’m trying to leave. I’m getting ready to leave and they surround my car, start banging on it, start shouting these contradictory orders.

Even though I was giving them no reason, they still felt the need to — one agent knelt on my back and another agent knelt on my neck. And during that time, I’m just pleading with them that I couldn’t breathe.

I was in isolation. I was in basically this concrete cell. I was stripped naked in like a hospital gown. And they leave the lights on 24/7.

They just came out and they said that I was violent and that I assaulted agents. Why lie when it’s on video of everything that happened? Why lie?”

If one is looking for left-FP ideas from electeds in the US, could do worse than follow the lead of Ilhan Omar, who has repeatedly put forth a repeal of the Hague Invasion Act as a core necessity for international rule of law. US alignment should not function as a backstop against justice for crimes

An ICE arrest, a scuffle, a cemetery, and a missing wallet play central roles in unusual court hearing - The Boston Globe In an unusual hearing that unfolded in federal court, a magistrate judge probed agents for answers: What happened at the cemetery?

He's a lawful US resident. ICE arrested him anyway then took him to a cemetery, where he says they beat him.

Now a judge wants to know why ICE never returned his wallet and keys.

Meta Plans to Add Facial Recognition Technology to Its Smart Glasses

Facebook plans to put facial recognition in its glasses and they think we’re too stupid to fight back.

Their internal memo: “We will launch during a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns.”

One reason why public servants have for cause job protections is exactly to protect against this: an expert public servant with years of training fired from their job because they failed to satisfy the personal whims of egotists.

In terms of what cures are being lost:

- Epstein-Barr virus is perhaps the major trigger for multiple sclerosis
- herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis
- shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease

In the blanket incident, Noem had to switch planes after a maintenance issue was discovered, but her blanket wasn't moved to the second plane, according to the people familiar with the incident. The Coast Guard pilot was initially fired and told to take a commercial flight home when they reached their destination. They eventually reinstated the pilot because no one else was available to fly them home.

Ending this operation is not enough.

We need justice and accountability. That starts with independent investigations into the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, economic restitution for businesses impacted, abolishing ICE, and the impeachment of Kristi Noem.

Yikes here are the numbers for the past 12 months. Everything is pretty much dead except healthcare/social assistance. Note that healthcare growth is largely not about the business cycle -- it's about the aging of the population and more elderly people needing care.

Building the camps The warehouseification of detention and initial thoughts on stopping it.

When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.
