-- I am so excited to see what the next years bring!"
In this time, weβve learned so much about our early human ancestors, including the littlest of neanderthal kiddos, and lots of things I thought weβd never know β I mean, who had sequencing of the Neanderthal genome on their 21st Century Bingo Card?!
April says βThe hummus photo is actually one I helped to make at a cooking class when I took a bit of time out from research.β
April says βThe crepe photo, you can say something like : And happily sometimes my research also takes me to France!β
Throughout my career I have been privileged to take part in exciting scientific discoveries, collaborate with brilliant colleagues, work with inspiring students, and of course, eat delicious food!
a 350,000 year old hand axe with horse blood found on it from Shishan Marsh 1 Azraq
and most recently to visit Misliya, a site with the oldest modern human remains outside of Africa near Haifa in northern Israel. Next stop? Possibly Azerbaijan, more on that coming soon!
April, Chris, and Stu excavating at Shishan Marsh 1 in Azraq, NE Jordan;
My work has taken me to Azraq in NE Jordan where my team and I found the world's oldest stone tools with blood on them (stay tuned for new results!)

From Dr. April Nowell
"Neanderthals are my passion and for the past 25 years I have studied how they lived (and died) in the Levant, a geographic corridor that connects Africa and Eurasia.

Designed for students seeking employable skills, this course builds a toolkit of techniques frequently used in the B.C. archaeology consulting sector.
Please note: this is not a research excavation. The course consists of hands-on workshops in archaeological survey and documentation, plus discussions of heritage management regulations and Indigenous and provincial protocols.
Students will build proficiency in non-invasive field techniques used daily by professional archaeologists. This course emphasizes practical skills development outside the classroom.
Weeks 2β3 focus on hands-on training in archaeological field techniques for identifying, mapping, and recording sites. We will visit archaeological settings around Greater Victoria in intertidal and forested environments.
This local field course has two parts. Week 1 (5 days) is participation in the UVic Ocean Past Conference on campus, featuring global research on coastal archaeology. Students will learn from and contribute to an international community of scholars.
Eligible ANTH students may apply for funding or scholarship support to offset course fees. Reimbursement follows successful completion. Contact Jindra Belanger (jindra@uvic.ca) for details.
