An illustration of a scene. A woman in pearly scifi-fantasy armor is observing from shadowy cliffs and brambles, a view of pilgrims approaching temple gates. The temple stands tall, with colossal pillars reaching somewhere high above our vision. On the front face of the temple, a face carved on the rock is overseeing the valley with a stern look. Besides him are two marble cobras in guard, and the temple gate is surrounded by two marble figures of kneeling men, holding up shepard's canes.

This isnβt criticism by the way. The moment this series starts taking itself seriously, itβs dead to me.

Mild spoilers here, but RE9 has maybe my favorite series dumb story element where a shadow organisation tried to cover their tracks by launching a nuclear missile into a city in US soil, in order to keep their secret lab hidden or something? Iβm sure this subtle maneuver wouldnβt raise any suspicion

The plot was of course stupid, and any emotional weight was wiped clean with the typical get out of jail free card, the series is known for, but that I wouldnβt have any other way. They made RE8 ending into a bummer and it didnβt feel right.

Though what elevated Leonβs campaign from boredom was Leon himself. My girlfriend was smitten, and I found his acting cool, but not quite pulling it off sincerity as charming as it was in RE4.

Inthink it wouldβve worked better with Leon being sparsely intermixed with Graceβs events like they did in the beginning. That way it wouldβve heightened Graceβs vulnerability. The Grace part was truly the best the series has been. Leon was just almost RE6 mediocre.

Finished RE9 and while Graceβs part was stellar, large parts of Leonβs were pretty weak. There were great moments, but a lot of it was killing the same two zombies in pee colored rubble.

These arenβt necessarily the beat in their respective series, but are the ones that to me hold the pure core essence of what made these series great and which inspired me the most.

Every game Wily has a sillier plan, and every X game Sigma is a more tortured version of himself.

What I like about X games, is how Sigma gets increasingly unhinged as the games go by. He starts as a clean charismatic warlord and starts getting an increasingly mutilated body horror versions of himself, until by X8 he's the digital Satan. They should've just leaned on that.

I think it was a result of the shift in the market, where everyone realized that games are not just for kids, and everyone was hurrying to make edgy shit, or making games with darker tones. Having Dr. Wily cause genocide makes as much sense as Bowser causing a genocide.

It's not that I'm super into the storytelling of Mega Man games, it's more that I hate that Capcom at one point in time was whether it was appropriate for the tone of the series or not.

I feel like the plot of Mega Man 10 with Wily creating the robot virus that acts like the flu, is sort of an assurance that we're never talking about the Zero virus again, and this goofy nonsense is what these games are actually about. I really hope so.

That the goofy ass Dr. Wily, riding a skull pirate ship that kids love to defeat and laugh when he goes "neener neener" and flies off in his silly flying saucer, is actually the trigger of the apocalypse.

After X5 they dropped the whole Wily thing from the X series as well. But there's always that shadow hanging there now. Every time they announce a new Mega Man game, I always worry that for some god awful reason, they're going to bring back the topic of Dr. Wily and the Zero virus.

Until fortunately some smart people at Capcom realized that having these two games connected makes no sense, and in Mega Man 9 Wily rides a robot dinosaur and we're all pretending like none of this ever happened.

For a while it seemed like Capcom was hell bent on tying these two series together, the abrupt whiplash ending where Mega Man nearly blows Wily's head off in MM7, the robot uprising theme in Mega Man and Bass. The Zero Silhouette in one of the arcade games.

The thought process behind it, I don't understand. You could see that the doctors Light and Wily are just X's version of those characters, but the Cutscenes in X4 have Wily reference his nemesis in times before X, and some of the original timeline Mega Man games have references to Zero too.

I'd still be fine with it, even if it makes the games a little depressing, but they bungle up the robot uprising story, by revealing it to be caused by a computer virus, which makes the whole robot superiority theme pointless, but even worse is that the virus was created by... Dr. Wily.

You start with fighting against a fascist robot eugenicist uprising, but by the sixth game the earth has become inhospitable to life, and people are forced to live underground, if you to the Zero games, humanity is nearly wiped out by the robots.

Kind of sullying the point. But more so, in the ways where they just keep upping the stakes every game, where these fun anime style action games just become kind of a bummer in a lot of ways.

So when they decided that Zero was Dr. Wily's last robot, that's when the games started going downhill. For one, there's some impact to the X one epilogue where X watches the destruction he caused in the name of peace and mourns for those lost forever. Except Zero just comes back in the next game.

OG Megaman has always been fine as it is. Dr. Wily is a saturday morning cartoon villain, he lives in a skull castle and always has a new cooky plan to take over the world, and generally having a good time inventing themed robots.

Involving Dr. Wily in the X storyline was such a weird choice. I always saw X as sort of a retelling of Megaman with a slightly more mature tone, the first game is interesting even story wise, but these are simple action platformers and there's not maneuverability for storytelling.
