Here is a very extreme example but shows a heavily misaligned signal for both the hole and without the hole case. Without the hole you still have a correct looking TDS and spectrum but with the hole it's a complete mess.
Imo they became popular as they were used a lot on the big 40mm beamline setups (where they have very little impact and work fine!) but as femtosecond lasers got smaller people kept the habit
you essentially take out the centre of a gaussian beam, and yes also a pain to align as you need align two different fociii
Scales are my bad visualisation, images are normalised to themselves so dynamics in images are clear eo TDS normalises wrt one without hole
