Check out this project that Jim and I made. It cost $50 for 4 filters and $50 for the fan, and has a lot more surface area than a standard HEPA filter. It's MERV 13 which is a bit below HEPA in quality. The fan also points upwards so I can dry fursuit paws on it.
I'm hesitant to recommend specific products, but some general advice: Don't use anything that writes to the drive; have a second drive to copy data off to as you recover it. If there's a sign of a physical error, ie. clicking, power it down and engage a professional service.

Thanks for your perspective. I was there, but wasn't staff. It seemed like a regular furry convention at the time so hearing the perspectives from people like you and Trapa helps understanding what happened.
