I saw “enterprise” customers have longer. Meaning studios aren’t completely screwed. But yeah.
And it’s not just they nope out & leave. They take their ball & go home.
I still have CS2 Photoshop running on my (old) system. But there’s no offline version here.
Licensing use vs owning is criminal
This is why you don’t base your career on only 1 piece of software.
1 month warning. (Yeah businesses get longer but still)
Apple burned me with FCP7 to X & it took 2 years to restart my career at a lower level in another software.

So you don’t have kids CRYING
Some kids are sensitive (usually due to uncontrollable life events - RIP pet or grandparent, etc) & we want to bring joy not sad. So if 1 line can fix that why not?
It’d be nice if I could be sponsored (Taft Harley’d) into SAG so more of my scratch can stay in. Or if I could somehow join in my own. But that wasn’t happened yet. Until then I’m loving this!! Thanks editors for liking my ad-lib & marketing dept for thinking my voice was worthy of the trailer!
I’ve done scratch voices on nearly every project I’ve worked on as an editor. Last minute rewrites. Female characters. Sneezes. Grunts. Gasps. Whistles (a surprising amount of people can’t whistle a tune!).
But this is the first time officially my voice has been in the wild & I was paid for acting!
FYI the fainting bunny is scratch too. That’s an APM.
You might notice that Mane sounds different in the teaser trailer than the full trailer too. Why? We hadn’t cast the actor yet when the teaser came out! That’s the director’s voice in the teaser. Marketing works fast. & filmmaking takes time
paying me SAG minimum as an actor. So I signed a ton of paperwork & in return I get about $1200 & my voice in a trailer.
My voice was replaced in the film before the trailer even aired.
It’s an honor that they liked my voice enough for the trailer.
So why am I in the trailer?
Technically I’m not supposed to be. It’s rare this happens. But they weren’t able to record the loop of that scene prior to the trailer being made. Essentially? I got lucky! I’m not SAG (yet). I shouldn’t be in there! But the cost to replace me in time was higher than
usually triggers a note saying the other guy is fine so you don’t have kids. Plus it might be funny to say he’s fine in that situation. So I threw in the “He’s fine” line in my record to be safe. Even though it’s a feature sometimes you get the same notes.
Well they liked the line & used it!
I was asked to do scratch of one of the bunnies to be replaced later. My job? Make various scared sounds in a high pitched voice.
While recording that I saw the gag you see in the trailer. Guy bunny faints & is dragged off.
Being a TV editor I knew kids could interpret that as dying which…
We had a scene with scared bunnies as a gag. Voices would eventually be replaced with a group of SAG actors called a “Loop Group” later. Loop Groups fill in misc voices. Crowds. Tiny one line roles that aren’t cameos, etc. people good at ad-libbing & ADR lip syncing & doing more than one voice.
Not being SAG means you can’t be used in the final OR the studio has to spend $10k + to Taft Hartley you (sponsor your SAG membership). Which is rare due to cost. It happened more in the Shrek 1 days. Less now.
So what happened here in this trailer?
Who are scratch actors? Anyone at the studio! Usually it involves editorial staff (due to speed of need), but it can be board artists, production staff, or anyone who can act & volunteers! One place I worked at out go to female voice was the receptionist!
But 90% of the time they aren’t SAG
When I worked on story driven TV cartoons it was common to record the actors first, then board & animate to that
But when I worked on a board driven show we’d record scratch (temp) of the dialogue first, then when we finalized the story we recorded the actors
In features it’s a combination of both
There are many reasons temporary voices might be recorded for animation.
- Animation takes a while!
- to try story points before spending money to commit & animate to it
- celeb voices are both busy & expensive. We want dialogue nailed down first before they step in the booth!
- to save on records
