This conversation about Imposter Syndrome is one of my favorite examples of the Linguistics phenomenon of code-switching. I reckon Black people, maybe most people(?!) recognize President Obama is talking to a Black person, before the interviewers are shown. Fantastic.
I noticed that immediately too, and I agree that there’s no “on/off switch” for code-switching. We do it for efficient and effective communication, and it doesn’t take away from who you are (for those that still think it’s an act)
Code-switching happens automatically; it’s not an intentional decision by the speaker. It’s a natural modulation to improve the effectiveness of whatever you’re trying to communicate.
Black Linguistics nerd here! President Barack Obama’s eulogy for Rev Jesse Jackson is a code-switching masterclass. If you know what you’re listening for, you can hear President Obama toggling back-and-forth between so-called Standard English and AAVE, based on crowd engagement.
