Introducing Faith to Faithless | Helping people leaving high-control religious groups
Introducing Faith to Faithless | Helping people leaving high-control religious groups YouTube video by Humanists UK

Through our service @faith2faithless.bsky.social, we help people who have left, or who are leaving, high-control religious groups. Deciding to leave can be one of the most difficult and painful experiences a person can go through. We're here to help. ⬇️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMNa...

Reminder that your trauma recovery tools & needs don't need to make sense to anyone else. They don't have to live your life or manage your wounds. You do.

Create routines & cultivate tools that keep YOU stable, whether or not anyone else in the world "gets it."

One of my favorite activity carts was this one about neuroscience and neurophysiology, using a preserved sheep’s brain.

Schoolkids would sometimes ask me, β€œwhose brain is it?”

I’d answer,”they didn’t tell me his name; just that he wasn’t following the rules in the Butterfly House.”

If you're reading this, you know someone who struggles with CPTSD or DID, whether you know it or not.

If you're reading this, the person in your life working their trauma recovery is facing demons & leveraging courage of a sort most humans can never imagine.

A black and white illustration inspired by Susan Hill's novel The Woman in Black. A woman in late Victorian mourning stands in a graveyard in a flat desolate landscape. There are two stone pillars in the foreground.

An illustration of the ghost of a woman in a dress of the mid to late Georgian era with a sort of skeletal face. She is stood / hovering in front of a detached Georgian house in the dusk, flanked by dark trees, with its front door lit from above.

A print of a black and white illustration inspired by John Masefield's novel the Box of Delights: a bearded man with a heavy pack trudges through snow pursued by wolves. There's a big white house in the distance, and a small aeroplane (in fact a car-o-plane) in the sky. The scene is flanked by trees and emerges from a square box. The face of its beholder is just visible.

A ridiculous black and white illustration (in print form) of worshippers dancing around a ceremonial bonfire in the trees. The flames take the shape of a large cat's head.

Hello! I've been a bit preoccupied lately with real life and stuff but I've finally put a bit of effort into my Etsy shop... added new prints and restocked old ones. Do have a look. Sharing much appreciated. Thank you.

Well, I'm on my way home from birding on the Platte River in Gibbon, Nebraska and I can say with absolute certainty that the white Pelicans have not yet arrived there. Only about 115,000 Sandhill Cranes, 50-60 thousand snow geese, 1000 or so pintails, 1 whooper (allegedly) and 0 pelicans.

Many abuse survivors think repeating β€œI’m not a piece of shit” is positive self-talk. I did.

Saying β€œI love & care for myself” can feel awkward & gross b/c it clashes with our self-perception, it's felt as a threat. Being kind to ourselvesβ€”despite what feels naturalβ€”is the basis of recovery.

You've been conditioned to be mean to yourself in your head-- but no one can keep you from working to change that. No one can force you to KEEP being mean to yourself.

No one can choose FOR you, how you talk TO you-- once you decide to go off autopilot.

The attempt to create communities where men and women alike share the full stature of humanity is an attempt to do something which has not been done before, and which can only be achieved under certain conditions. And one of these is the acceptance of reason as a guide in human conduct. If we choose an anti-rational philosophy, in this quest, at least, we are defeated. The enemies of reason are inevitably the opponents of β€˜equal rights’.

Winifred Holtby, Women and a Changing Civilisation (1934)

Doing research for a thing and chanced upon this quote from humanist Winifred Holtby (1898-1935). When you find progressive voices speaking so clearly from the past, you'd think it might depress you to reflect how much is still to be done, but in fact it's just uplifting to make their acquaintance.

Yes, beautiful moments!
The Comox glacier, yes. Dominating the skyline to the west. And now, in late winter with all the tons of new snow.
A rare bright sunny day as several more days of rain rain rain are forecast!

No joke: trauma recovery is stressful.

But compared to the stress of letting CPTSD kick our ass & destroy our future, it's a stress that I'll choose again & again & again. Because f*ck my bullies & abusers, you know?

Yes, thanks. Really a stunning bright, clear, sunny morning.
I got out a bit early to walk down to the waterfront and that view just about knocked me over.
No one else around on that bit of cobble’ beach, either.
The tide way low with the moon being full, exposed cobble flat going way out πŸŒŽπŸ’™

The trauma recovery community really, really needs to develop more resources for survivors who, yes, are recovering from past trauma-- but who are also right now vulnerable to or immersed in painful relationships or situations that are functionally inescapable.

There is not a thing in the world wrong w/ being unapologetically selective about who you let not just into your physical space, but your emotional & intellectual space as well. If they don't support the life & world you're trying to create, you don't have the bandwidth for them.

Hitting a speed bump in your trauma recovery isn't always a tragedy, or even necessarily a "setback." Sometimes we need to slow down & check in.

So today's not a 10X "progress" day in your recovery-- but maybe a day like today is exactly what your recovery needs right now.
