Some less common ones could be: caracal, lynx, llama, yak, tasmanian devil, fossa, anteater, honey badger, tapir, moose, snow leopard, ocelot, camel, or skunk?

Do they need to come from a specific place/climate? Or just any species?

Fan-fictions are probably the greatest form of compliment an author can receive. People care so much about your characters and your setting, that they want to get to play with them too. The author still writes the original story. No harm done.
