Megan Doty et al discovered that myelin remains for weeks after cortical axons degenerate. We call the sheaths without an axon de-axoned myelin. During the slow, asynchronous, degeneration, microglia don't play a major role in clearing the axon or de-axoned myelin. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Myelin sheaths in the central nervous system can withstand damage and dynamically remodel Myelin damage is a hallmark of several neurological disorders, but how it occurs remains to be fully understood. In this study, we found that early damage in zebrafish and rodent demyelination models ...

I am delighted to see this work published. A big thanks to everyone, particularly the excellent supervision of @lyons-lab.bsky.social, the work of co-first author @juliavdkorput.bsky.social and wonderful collaborators in Amsterdam and Oregon.

This support means a lot to us, not just as funding, but as trust in the work we’re doing. Building on the results we got in a former Telethon project, we aim now at optimizing an #oligodendroglia cell replacement strategy to sustain #neurodevelopment in a preclinical model of #microcephaly MCPH17

Oligodendrocyte mechanotransduction channel TMEM63A regulates myelin sheath geometry Dereddi, Djannatian, and colleagues show that oligodendrocytes use mechanical cues to measure axon size. The stretch-activated channel TMEM63A converts membrane tension into calcium signals, which cal...

We identified how mechanical forces shape myelin development. The TMEM63A channel in oligodendrocytes converts physical cues into molecular signals that control myelin growth.
