Would love to hear more about this assignment - are the cards part of the game?
I post somewhat intermittently, especially when the semester gets busy.
Iβve got 3 days of spring break left, so weβll see how much art gets made. Today I am annoyed at the new bird I started, so heβs in time out and I started a calico crab before I had to switch to some work stuff.
Looks like I have a lot of new followers! Hi!
Iβm Lisa, a biology prof who mostly studies sharks (fossils and living) π¦ and teaches anatomy, marine bio, paleo, and more.
Iβm also a musician (French horn) πΆ

Nice find!
I figured!
I was thinking about older sketches from naturalists that arenβt on bleached white paper and didnβt really have a background because the animal or plant was the focus
Painting of a black capped chickadee on a branch with berries
This week is spring break, and Iβm actually taking time off <gasp!>
Thereβs an art show focused on birds at my local gallery. Thus the bird-specific class from last weekend.
I might futz with the berries more, but I might submit this one.
@secretsluglab.bsky.social - any tips?
Thank you!
It is! I tend toward marine critters for my arts & crafts.
Painting of a tufted titmouse on a branch
One of the ways Iβm trying to mentally deal with <gestures to the atrocities> is by doing more creative things to recharge before diving back in.
Today a took a class on drawing and painting birds, and this titmouse was the end result.

A vibrant color photograph of renowned American marine biologist and ichthyologist Eugenie Clark, known as the "Shark Lady," captured in her element during a dive or research expedition. She is wearing a large diving mask pushed up on her forehead, snorkel attached, and a wetsuit or dive gear. She smiles broadly and joyfully while partially submerged in clear ocean water, surrounded by bubbles, with her face lit by sunlight reflecting off the surface. A large white buoy or float and underwater scenery are visible in the background, conveying her lifelong passion for studying sharks and marine life, her pioneering work in shark behavior, and her role as one of the first prominent female scientists in oceanography.
An underwater photograph of a bull shark swimming gracefully in deep blue ocean waters, captured from a slightly below and side angle. The shark has a robust, heavy-set body with a blunt snout, small black eyes, and a grayish-brown upper body fading to a lighter underside. Its dorsal fin is prominent, pectoral fins are broad, and several remora fish cling to its back near the tail. Sunlight filters from above, creating beams and highlights on the shark's skin as it glides with an open mouth revealing rows of sharp teeth, evoking the powerful yet often misunderstood nature of this coastal species known for its adaptability and occasional aggression toward humans.
Ichthyologist Eugenie Clark, ππ©π¦ ππ©π’π³π¬ ππ’π₯πΊ, died #OTD in 2015. A pioneer in scuba diving for research purposes, she proved sharks are capable of learning and was a world authority on Tetraodontiformes. She founded Mote Marine Lab and used her fame to drive global marine conservation. #WomenInSTEM
Watercolor painting of a blue and purple seahorse surrounded by sea grass
Today I spent a blissful couple of hours learning some basic watercolor techniques - a temporary reprieve from <gestures to everything>. I took a chance and freehanded this seahorse, and Iβm so happy with it!
My department at CSU Northridge is hiring a vertebrate functional morphologist! We've got a great EEB group, and we're looking for someone to carry forward a tradition of enriching organismal courses and community-engaged research. App review starts March 15

Awwww, hi Mike!!!! I'm glad you two got to hang out.
The image shows a blue Smilodon (a kind of extinct big cat with long canine teeth) roaring to the viewer on a red and orange background. It is framed by the words "CHIN UP" and "FANGS OUT". The style is like a vintage screenprint though the artwork is digital.
