Leave me out of this.
Leave me out of this.
A clear articulation of why & how the justice system as practiced & designed in the US is systematically a system for protecting the interests of wealth and exempting the wealthy from rules and accountability that governs the rest of us. Who can afford the legal team necessary for years of appeals?
It was surprisingly less expensive than I thought for all but the big three of the 90s. Doing the same for the handful of HBO shows I would like to rewatch, but might do library checkouts for the rest.
But when they outlaw the Bayesians...wait, wait, no, that doesn't work there.
I bought all the series on DVD, even the bad ones just in case, because I didn't want Paramount but needed Trek.
Bracketing that the White House illegal war defense has been handed over to teenage shitposters and meme lords on social media, on its own merits, several of these clips imply that we are the villains of their own story.
BREAKING: The U.S. economy lost more than 90,000 jobs last month, and despite President Trump's claims, native-born workers havenβt seen their wages or employment prospects rise under his administration's new immigration approach. https://ampr.gs/4d7cxhb
Who had "the right pursues sustainable energy production at scale to get off oil to avoid diplomatic pressure from oil producers when they want to bomb other countries for no reason" on their Trump 2 bingo card?
Truly! So much of modern Trek seems made by people for whom the appeal of the source material is inscrutable, tbh. Ironically, the team that understood the material best was the team behind Lower Decks.
Picard was one of my favorite fictional characters and that series was so bad I had to reconsider. I can't tell how much was Patrick Stewart being too old and too unwilling to listen to editors and how much was the new Trek writing teams being just bad at working with the material, but it was awful.
There's a guy I was on a friend's trip with that reminded me of a spitting image of a bit actor in the late 90s and early aughts and I couldn't for the life of me place the guy or his movies. I wonder if I load a picture to Claude...
Frankly, we will HAVE to prosecute former administration officials for any and all crimes if for nothing else than as a show of good faith to the world.
The Fallout series satire - which I thought played too cartoonish and chalked up to being a video game storyline adaptation - is maybe a little too realistic, it turns out.
I have a new piece in The Argument.
We haven't (yet?) seen AI affect the labor market by increasing number of people who are unemployed - but there's reason to believe it's contributing to a stagnant labor market by making firms less willing to hire.

I might end up just cancelling all streaming but Peacock, Hulu, and my league passes and go back to just buying the DVDs of shows I love. Frankly, it's probably much cheaper anyway.
A core problem in the body politic is that Republicans will only dare to be honest about how they feel about what they are seeing from the administration when they are retiring and no longer relevant to their party.
Screenshot from the NY Times that reads: "In the House primaries in Texas β¦ Representative Tony Gonzales, who is under scrutiny over an affair with a staff member who later died by suicide, was forced into a runoff against Brandon Herrera, a hard-line conservative and YouTuber known as the AK Guy."
Every once in a while you see a bullet summary that really captures just how stupid everything has become.
Five years later and it's part of a Congressional campaign. Thank God for Brad Lander. Please, NY-10, put him in Congress.
New JAMA paper: medical residency applications declined in abortion ban states after Dobbs. Nelson and I find the same, and also that young women and people with BA degrees become less likely to move to ban states.

I am talking myself into Trae Young. Watching him get thrown out of the game in street clothes standing up for Jamir Watkins made me like having the guy on the team.
At some point, if the court packing scheme that created this majority is going to drop the pretense that precedent and Constitutionality matter in any way, we can stop pretending their orders have any binding legitimacy.
Governor Hochul should ignore this judicial overreach and proceed with the redistricting.
Lol, The Guardian is doing the bit.
"The President launched an illegal war that will destabilize an entire region of the world without even a pretense of an objective or purpose. Here's why that's bad for Democrats."
I might end up the last person on Earth that doesn't use AI tools at all.
After the arrests of powerful men across the world, you might be asking why the US has so much trouble holding its leaders accountable for lawbreaking. Since Nixon, all three branches of government have worked hard to ensure they can break the law with impunity www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
And of course, the distinction and intentionality of consumption at theaters made film unique. So, mix in the pandemic years of breaking theater-going habits at some key margins and an emerging theater release schedule of like 2-3 weeks tops, and all the incentives push against theater going.
Movies as a central sphere of cultural production spent a decade or so slowly getting pinched by the rise of prestige TV and funding dominance of superhero movies. And then at the tail end of that, YouTube and TikTok rose to dominance in key demos that fractured and atomized cultural attention.
One of the craziest things is driving around and passing a big SUV with a guy in a ski mask in it and realizing that it's not someone about to rob a bank or something. It's just the federal government's unidentified kidnapping squad. And it's already just kind of part of the fabric of daily life.
People should lose their jobs over this. But we live in and have accepted such a dark, brutal system that none of the people involved in the injustice of his beating, wrongful imprisonment, and eventual death will face meaningful consequences.
This man survived war, came here as a refugee, & found a society so racked with indifference, suspicion, & sociopathy that he found himself brutally beaten by cops after he was lost and a woman simply called the police on him rather than trying to help, unjustly jailed for a year, then left to die.
