Yep well done most of you - thinking about the purpose of early Bronze Age miniature cups/incense cups/accessory vessels using @pottedhistory.bsky.social replicas! Managed not to set off the smoke alarm.
... it is rather a beautiful continuity, in the idea that hot coals may have been taken from the domestic hearth to light the pyre. It should be said they also work really well as hand warmers; essential on a cold night in the afterlife.
1/2 Just love to see our replicas used for teaching. I never liked BA miniature vessels being grouped as "incense cups" they probably served various purposes. Eg. Grape cups carry hot coals really well without burning your hand. Excellent for lighting a pyre or indeed a domestic fire. But there..
We love what we do! π When we started to research them, we realised that the range of expressions on the originals is amazing, makes me want to create a Bes emoji set!
A lovely late Roman Knife Handle found at Bifrons Anglo-Saxon cemetery and part of the Kent Archaeological Society Collection held at Maidstone Museums.
Hunting motifs such as this one are a common site throughout the Roman Empire!

This is my great-great grandmother, Sarah Kinsler Gibson Davis. ππΎ
She's the only child of our ancestors Daniel and Mary Katherine Kinsler whom our family has a picture of... she has more than a thousand descendants.
The enslavers brought our ancestors to Florida in 1842 during the Seminole Wars.
The wisest among us have always recognized religion as nothing more than the ability to control the masses from the time of the cave. It is evil presented as the most desirable good making it acceptable to those without the will or acumen to understand.
My photo shows a Roman Rippenschale (ribbed) blue glass drinking cup with a rounded body and slightly flaring rim. There is some breakage to the rim. The ribs run vertically around the body of the cup, with horizontal bands of white trail decoration around the cup. At the rear of the museum display case, part of a larger ribbed dark blue glass bowl can be seen.

That's weird, I didn't know about National Pig Day, but yesterday I was making these Roman pig rattles/whistles
Aww, bless you. Every penny still helps. 7th anniversary of hell this April, housebound since 2020 and fractured my pelvis (vertigo) the other week.

If you're digging the garden and want to get rid of some clay, I'll send my address π
The clay around the Peterborough area is so good that it's been used since prehistoric times. In fact it's still used by the London Brick Co. But the Roman Nene Valley industry was centered on Castor and Water Newton.

Correct Link!: Opening the kiln is always a little nerve wracking but, if I do say so myself, the latest batch of replica, Nene Valley, barbotine decorated, Roman colour coated Hunt Cups, have come out looking rather splendid! Get them before they sell out. share.google/PmpCsh2Z8CQx...
Nooooooo! Sad to hear that, your presentation style and obvious, genuine enthusiasm is perfect. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us in the future.

As a kid I used to walk the hills around Rothbury. My favourite place to eat my lunch was sitting inside one of the hut circles at Lotdenshaws Hill Fort, thinking of all the people who had done the same over two thousand years earlier.
This is the same level of cruelty I expect from Reform, their sipporters and anyone appointed by them. Facism doesn't necessarily arrive in jack boots, it infects Society one cruel step at a time!
2026 is a big year for @pottedhistory.bsky.social and I.
We will have been living and trading back in Rothbury for 20 years.
We will have been married for 50 years
And I will be celebrating my 70th birthday.
Here's to another year of family, adventures, creativity and laughter.
Crunchy!
Old photograph of fragmented comb, ErtebΓΈlle culture. From Madsen 'Affaldsdynger fra Stenalderen i Danmark, undersΓΈgte for Nationalmuseet' (1900), Plate VII
It's not an aggressive hand gesture sent from the distant past, but rather a comb with broken-off teeth from the eponymous ErtebΓΈlle shell midden.
Neergaard (1900) found the object itself to be 'probably the most charming of all the [ErtebΓΈlle] combs', but he is super underwhelmed by its decoration
Today I've been making this, a replica of the Shakenoak Farm, Roman syrinx. πΊ Sound on. You may note (excuse the pun), that my skill with ceramic technology is not matched by my musical ability. #Archaeology You'll find many more wonders at potted-history.co.uk
