Excited to share our new publication in Tectonophysics! We present updated active-fault mapping and paleoseismic evidence from the Aceh Fault, advancing our understanding of seismic hazard in northern Sumatra. Read here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1m7C%7E98w...

The focal mechanism just came out (GFZ) shows a strike-slip style, the nearby Baluran Fault north of the epicenter is mapped NE–SW, there might be some complexity, it can be unmapped structure at play, i'lll keep following as more data & local reports come in.

A M5.7 shallow eq hit off the coast near Situbondo, East Java this afternoon. Felt pretty strong in Banyuwangi & Bali, also reported in Lombok, Surabaya, even Madura.Β  Reports of damage are starting to come inβ€”will keep this thread updated as we learn more. Stay safe, everyone!

For, um, absolutely no reason at all, let’s do a thread about the biggest scandal in the history of mining and the reason that Canada regulates professional geology and protects investors in mineral projects.

For my first post on Bluesky, what's better than making the case for our new paper just out in Geophy. Res. Letters.
Evidence for pre-earthquakes damage modulating the 2008 Wenchuan event rupture. Check it out here:

Northern California just got quite the shake from a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. You can use our Station Monitor app to see how the ground moved near you.

I just saw Moana 2 with my nephew and really geeked out about the geology.πŸ˜… They thought through the rock types way more than anticipated (w/a couple of exceptions). Srsly, I nearly gasped when we first glimpsed the lost island Moana had been seeking! Perhaps a spoiler(?) so I'll do a mini🧡 βš’οΈπŸ§ͺ

Those are food seller stalls along a paved road, the road itself was carved into metamorphic basement rocks, pretty nice drive!

I went back and forth to North Sumatra in the past few months, studying the paleoseismology of the Aceh, Seulimeum and Batee Fault of the Sumatran Fault Zone. Do I need to tell you why I love this beautiful place? I'll follow up with more stories!

This is how I feel about losing the science community on Twitter. The "Twitter" part isn't what mattered, the "science community" part is.
