Now more than ever Iβm convinced losing Anthony Bourdain meant we lost probably the biggest person on tv who advocated for the wonders of meeting new people and calling anyone online who hated learning new cultures the children they were, ruthlessly to the camera.

We could all have a pretty great Tribute to Screenwriters Who Just Died triple-feature weekend and watch Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Candidate. Nobody would regret a minute of it.
RIP Alan Trustman and Jeremy Larner.

A disc jockey who took a job and in doing so became an example for education, curiosity, precision, and conducting yourself in a gentlemanly way. He funded full scholarships to Fordham for the underprivileged, gave money to libraries, schools in Canada, etc.

A simple German woodcutting from 1490 showing a Renaissance dude on the right who is having a lower back spasm so bad his right shoe was blown clean off. On the left is a witch (βeine Hexe") with a bow and arrow who just shot him in the back. (Otherwise, why would his back hurt? Hexenschuss!) The engraving is credited to Johann Zainer as was taken from the book βTractatus von den bΓΆsen weibern, die man hexen nennt,β or βTreatise on evil women, who are called witches,β by Ulrich Molitor.
The Czech word for lower back pain or lumbago is hexenΕ‘us, which is borrowed from a German word, Hexenschuss.
The first time I heard it I was like, βOh, like a witch just shot you in the back? Thatβs what you think happened?β
Dear reader, at one point, thatβs exactly what they thought.

Some great writing from Todd Farmer. Heartbreaking, then inspirational, a call for empathy in a world that doesn't always seem capable of it. And now I'm excited to check out his novels, too!

1972.
Jackie Mason's only starring dramatic role, John G. Avildsen's The Stoolie is suddenly available for streaming on tubi.
Bleak 70s Cinema - Peak Bleak - it's the type of movie that would normally star someone like Elliott Gould or Stacy Keach. Well worth seeing:

If ever there was a weekend to see Wong Kar Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000) in 4K on the big screen, this was it. Sometimes you need to wallow in beauty. And others felt the same way, judging by the packed house at @siffnews.bsky.social .
