Maryland’s #HB1543 would also make explicit migrant workers’ right to guests in employer-provided housing, among other essential protections.
Maryland’s #HB1543 would also make explicit migrant workers’ right to guests in employer-provided housing, among other essential protections.
Maryland’s #HB1543 would protect migrant workers from economic coercion in recruitment and improve workers’ access to the Maryland Department of Labor administrative complaint process.
Today, @CDMmigrante testified in support of #HB1543. This bill is a crucial shield against labor exploitation and human trafficking in Maryland. Here is why it matters: 🧵 (1/4)

The US is increasing the employers' near-total control over temporary low-wage workers, effectively creating a large, racialized servitude system of laborers from the Global South. @cdmigrante.bsky.social @epi.org @ufwfoundation.bsky.social

Carmen Martínez, our Deputy Policy Director shared with @prismreports.org our concerns over lawmakers’ efforts to expand guestworker programs while weakening worker protections. A recipe for even more abuse and exploitation of migrant guestworkers.
Trade agreements can be tools for collective economic growth and shared prosperity. But they must also serve to expand human and labor rights, improve working conditions and to elevate labor standards for all.

Read CDM's full comment in opposition of the Trump administration's new AEWR methodology here: cdmigrante.org/cdm-comment-...
The AEWR determines the minimum wage employers must pay H-2A farmworkers and other farmworkers employed alongside them.
W/ the new methodology, the Trump admin puts employer profits over farmworkers' livelihoods, by allowing employers to drive down wages for all farmworkers.
CDM strongly opposes the Trump Administration's new wage calculations that would reduce farmworkers' wages by $5,500 per year. Farmworkers are already some of the lowest paid workers in the US, and these new wage determinations would make it harder for them to make ends meet.
CDM's Deputy Policy Director, Carmen Martinez, shares in the article: These proposals "'are geared toward making it easier and less costly for employers,' but not better or safer for workers."

But these "solutions" only take into account employers’ needs. They fail to recognize the urgent need for strengthened worker protections to reduce the risk of abuse, exploitation, wage theft, forced labor, and trafficking—harms disproportionately faced by migrant guestworkers across industries.
Lawmakers are scrambling to provide “solutions” to a growing labor shortage caused by the Trump administration’s worker deportations and efforts to de-document people already in the U.S., stripping them of their immigration status and work authorization.
Farmworkers are some of the most essential yet lowest paid workers in the US. And now, the Trump admin is slashing their hard-earned wages even more.
This shortsighted and exploitative measure will negatively impact thousands of farmworkers & their families.
