Our #NHS should be publicly owned, publicly run, and delivered to maximise public benefit, and that would be cheapest for the government to deliver too!
The Green Party of England and Wales would save money on the NHS by bringing services back in-house, so all but the most specialist services are delivered by the NHS itself, eliminating private profits.
Coupled with the recent decision to axe Healthwatch - a body to ensure the patient voice is heard - this risks allowing a dangerous reduction in checks and balances on providers of NHS services! We're horrified that a Labour government would require such changes.
It was pointed out that NENC had made savings previously, by sharing services across their wider area, so we don't have to make as big cuts here.
But these cuts can only mean services will be less responsive to local needs.
North East & North Cumbria (NENC) ICB replied that they aim to reduce duplication in quality assurance (so private providers could be marking their own homework!), and they'd aim to retain as much capacity as possible. This did not allay Bryony's concerns!
On Thursday, Darlington's Health & Housing Scrutiny Committee were briefed about the government-required changes to Integrated Care Boards (ICB). These are the bodies which commission NHS care from (generally private) providers.
