Forradalom és intervenció
Iránban tömegek demonstrálnak a rezsim ellen, a halottak száma egyre nő — népfelkelés van (talán forradalom?).
Régen sokat foglalkoztam a forradalom politikafilozófiájával, beleértve a forradalom oldalán történő külföldi intervenció etikáját is, ami most Irán nyomán értelemszerűen aktuális lett, úgyhogy írtam erről.

Ignoring the Unreasonable
Illiberal and antidemocratic political forces, for example, in the form of far-right populism, are on the rise. Such politics, commonly referred to as ‘unreasonable’ in political philosophy, is widely...
My paper "Ignoring the Unreasonable" was just published. In it, I argue that when it comes to supporters of illiberal or authoritarian politics ("the unreasonable" in Rawlsian parlance), we should not listen to them and try to understand their perspective or where they're coming from.

Salience in Society
Salience in Society
The Nature and Ethics of Collective Attention
University of Vienna, 3–4 December 2024
I'm flying to Vienna to talk at this really great event on collective attention and salience in society. I'll present some of my newer work on agenda setting and democratic theory, and I'm looking forward to all these talks, it's a very exciting progamme. sites.google.com/view/salienc...

The Paradox of Gilmore Girls and the Sopranos
Media
In Season 6, episode 4 an episode of the Sopranos, an episode of Gilmore Girls is playing on TV.
In Season 7, episode 17 of Gilmore Girls, Richard is wearing a tracksuit. Lorelai makes a joke about it by asking if he's having lunch with Tony Soprano.
So obviously this means that both the Sopranos and Gilmore Girls exist as television shows in the other's respective universe. B ut more alarmingly, this means that each universe has now become a televised universe of itself within their own universes. When the Gilmore Girls watch the Sopranos, they will see themselves in the show.
Likewise, when Tony Soprano watches Gilmore Girls, he will witness a direct reference to himself. It's like the effect of two mirrors facing each other: the universes of the Gilmore Girls and the Sopranos are infinitely replicated all the way down.
This is the kind of paradox I live for

A Disease of Affluence
Trump's supporters are not motivated by economic anxiety, but by its opposite.
I'm not fully sure about the empirical picture here, but as usual, @polphilpod.bsky.social's take has very much intelligence and insight, and I agree with a lot of it. I'm also very dissatisfied with the "abandoned working class" narrative.

Civic Friendship, the Burdens of Politics, and the Ethics of Attention
In Philosophizing the Indefensible Shmuel Nili proposes strategic political theory as a productive and respectful manner for political philosophy to engage with unreasonable political views. One objec...
My short piece on Shmuel Nili's book Philosophising the Indefensible, is now published in Analyse & Kritik. Although I was a bit critical, I think this book has really important things to say about engaging with illiberal/unreasonable politics and the responsibilities of political philosophers.

... This raises the question of who the great political leaders of the past century were. Under this theory most of the usual candidates (Churchill or whatever) probably wouldn't qualify. Who would, if anyone? And is this the right view? Is there such a thing as a great political leader? Maybe not.

But that's already the case in human society. We are already deeply responsible for and dependent on one another. It is only under a hyper-individualist ideology that this fact becomes hidden from us. Or maybe not, I don't know. And yes, I do have a kid.

People talk about becoming a parent as a 'transformative experience' resetting one's whole outlook on the world. I wonder if that's a late capitalism thing. I guess what's supposed to be transformative is the feeling of deep responsibility for another person and their deep dependence on you. 1/2
