I guess some folks in the lit world have never read Ursula Le Guin’s THE ONES WHO WALK AWAY FROM OMELAS, and short story that pierces the heart.
I recall watching videos of when it was burning and the many Parisians who gathered and sang and wept. It’s almost a miracle that France found skilled masons and stone carvers who could reconstruct this beautiful building.
I hope this is good news for tenants who can’t afford rent hikes. So often big rent hikes are designed to drive out long-term tenants so that the property can be “redeveloped.”

Way to do the work! I’m a writer, too, and with somewhat the same trajectory. I’ve been so flummoxed by the election that I’ve allowed emotional paralysis to interfere with my writing practice, but today I was able to get back to my desk.
Same here, @mightyquinn17.bsky.social. Looking for that ray of hope. The first moment of peace I was occurred when watching the PBS American Masters’ features about James Baldwin and Julia Alvarez. The Baldwin program was an early American Masters’ feature, but Alvarez bio was recent.
This touches on the sleeping dragon within all of us. It is practically unendurable to see their gloating smiles while half the nation is deep in grief.
Yeah, sometimes, it’s good to just get out in the world and rub elbows with humanity. When I was Writer in Residence for the City of Mesa Public Libraries in Arizona, I met, or just sat and observed, book lovers from a cross section of the AZ population.
This is heartening news.
Sobriety will be a huge long-term gift and lessen the inner turmoil. One of my sisters had been sober for 27 years, and you know how she did it? Day by day. My other two sisters have continued to drink, and now they’re almost 70 and bitter, backbiting, and cynical. Stay the course.
