Nick Vivyan, Chris Hanretty (@chanret.bsky.social) and I have a new book out: “Idiosyncratic Issue Opinion and Political Choice”. The core of the book is making the argument that citizens’ views about political issues neither reduce to an ideological orientation nor to a lack of substance. (1/10)

Map showing tens of thousands of protests across the US between Trump's inauguration last year and January 31, 2026.
The volume & geographic distribution of protest nationwide during year 1 of Trump's second term was extraordinary.

Figure 1. Pre-colonial cave paintings (reproduced as sketches) near Guruve in Zimbabwe.

Why “rooted”? Translating human rights locally matters now more than ever. Local history may help defang opponents’ “foreignness” claims. E.g., we draw on pre-colonial cave paintings to show queer presence long before colonial laws. (3/3)

Key takeaway: rooted messages are one way to talk about LGBTQI people in hard contexts. An indigeneity frame reduced hostility toward LGBTQ neighbors; a liberation frame nudged support for equal rights. Movement without backlash is important where LGBTQI people have low visibility. (2/3)

Out now with @adamsharris.bsky.social in @bjpols.bsky.social : We test “rooted” activist frames for LGBTQI tolerance—grounded in local history & national narratives—in Zimbabwe. Biggest thanks to the many people who helped get this off the ground. (1/3) Read here:
