An isolated skull from Las Hoyas (Early Cretaceous, Spain) informs the early evolution towards elongated rostra in enantiornithine birds (Aves, Ornithothoraces) The fossil record of Early Cretaceous enantiornithine birds from the Iberian Peninsula is the most significant in the world outside of China. Despite its historical relevance, taxonomic diversity, and...

Also, the importance of this paleo-birding spot (which many of us would have loved to visit with binoculars) in the Early Cretaceous of Spain keeps growing. #LasHoyasFossilSite #Birdwatching

With its cranial proportions, this fossil reinforces the idea of the vast phenotypic diversity of the enantiornithines at the first stages of its evolutionary history, suggesting that longipterigids, one of its most specialized groups, occupied very distant spots in Eurasia🌍

By dressing it in its plumage, we gave it this appearance thanks to the incredible paleoart by Roc Olivé, with the help of paleo-ornithologist Juan Benito.

We reconstructed the cranial anatomy, showing that *Gorgonavis* had a relatively long beak and 4 small pairs of teeth at the tip, defining characteristics of enantiornithine birds belonging to the Longipterygidae group, such as Longipteryx or Rapaxavis.

...and after examining it through µCT-scan, we were able to confirm that it was, and that it could give us more information than we thought.

Say👋 to *Gorgonavis alcyone*, the newest enantiornithine bird from the Early Cretaceous of Spain✨🐦

We welcome here the 1st adult cranial remains of a bird from the fossil site of Las Hoyas, and the 1st longipterygid out of China...

🌳🔨🐦 How do woodpeckers withstand the impact of pecking?

Their most iconic behavior is possible thanks to (1) unique cranial joints and (2) bypassing a general rule of skull transformation in other birds in favor of the influence of a larger brain👇

Great new paper on the evolution of birds - showing how changes in forelimbs (becoming wings) and legs were linked together. I LOVE research like this which reveals the secrets of how evolution works - how development, genetics, form are all joined up: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...
