Yes — that Markwayne Mullin. The senator who tried to start a fistfight during a Senate hearing in 2023 because someone insulted him on Twitter.
That’s who’s now in charge of the Department of Homeland Security.
What could possibly go wrong?

100 years of Grand Lake: Oakland’s favorite cinema is an epic love story
How did Oakland’s favorite movie theater survive for a century? The answer includes Ryan Coogler, real butter and a theater operator who fell in love with a money pit.
“In many ways it’s a time capsule. And it will be here for another 100 years.”
For the Grand Lake’s 100th birthday 🎂🍿 I wrote about a romance between a man and architecture — and how it rescued the best theater in the Bay Area.

There's been a lot of debate within the Democratic establishment about what rhetoric to use via ICE.
Well, an incumbent doesn't lose by 48 percentage points very often—and her vote on collaborating with ICE was the defining issue here.

Virginia redistricting election can move forward, court rules
Although Monday’s ruling means the redistricting referendum will take place, it is not the end of the legal saga.
BREAKING: In a win for Virginia voters, a court rules that Democratic lawmakers’ special election, which would allow voters to decide on mid-decade redistricting to counter GOP gerrymandering, can proceed.
Virginians can begin voting on the measure this Friday, March 6.

I get why/that people say this, but dont' underestimate this:
all other social networks are invested in making sure that posts that link to journalism remain buried, or at least never go viral.
BlueSky doesn't do that. That makes it very valuable to a ton of newsrooms righ tnow.

“Not Ready for Prime Time.” A Federal Tool to Check Voter Citizenship Keeps Making Mistakes.
The Department of Homeland Security pushed out the revamped tool while it was still adding data. That led to widespread misidentification, particularly for citizens born outside the U.S.
The Department of Homeland Security has had to correct information provided to at least five states after its SAVE voter tool misidentified some voters as noncitizens, according to correspondence between state and federal officials.

The Smithsonian's queer erasure of an AIDS artwork should alarm us all
By omitting the tragic story behind Felix González-Torres "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.), the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery is setting a perilous precedent, warns art scholar Ignacio Da...
"My worries began when the exhibition's introductory sign omitted Felix's connection to the AIDS crisis. My fears turned into outrage when I read the museum label ... which, instead of explaining the installation's title and meaning, refers to "175 pounds as ideal weight.""
