Well, now it's not #worldbookday anymore... but the good news is that 10:59 will be a book all year long! Yay! π₯³π

Today is #worldbookday in the UK! π₯³π
It may be a tenuous reason to give my own book a plug, but it's a reason. So, here goes: 10:59 is a book! Yay! Lots of people seem to like it and you should definitely read it yourself to see if they're right.

Stop cutting them down
Forests donβt just store carbon. They keep people alive
Forests influence climate not only by storing carbon but by cooling the air
Tropical forests show the strongest cooling, often exceeding 6Β°C relative to cleared land.

Spotting these bird prints conjured a lovely image of 2 neighbours stopping for a quick chat...
Tit: Hey! How are ya?
Finch: Good thanks! You?
Tit: Yeah. Cold enough for ya?
Finch: I'll say! The missus accused me of getting fat. I told her, I'm just fluffed up!
Tit: Haha, you & me both, mate.

Interesting! Thank you π
And I love how one of the experts is called "Anna Pidgeon"... ππ
Our environment is rapidly deteriorating as politicians increasingly deprioritize action in favor of short-term nationalist interests. Past predictions that we are heading for global societal collapse suddenly donβt seem that unlikely. Is there still hope?

Yes, it's a pretty effective survival trick for lots of lizard species. And shed tails will often twitch a bit to fool predators... but I think slow worms are unusual because their detached tails will thrash and wriggle for several minutes.
Not in North America (sorry!) or Australia - they live in central and western Europe. Here's one of ours in France π:
Slow worms! If attacked, they do a nasty smelly poo to deter the predator. π© If that doesn't work, they can shed their tails... and the detached tail portion carries on thrashing & twitching for a few minutes, hopefully keeping the predator busy while the slow worm escapes. Zombie tails ftw! π¨π
We're watching an increasingly deranged bully retaliate & threaten over any perceived slight to his insatiable ego.
This one man could all too easily lead the world to war. And anyone who survives to pick up the pieces will know that those who saw it coming and who could have stopped him... didn't.

What Iβve learned since I did this post over a year ago has led me to conclude that microplastics ARE unquestionably a greater threat to complex life on Earth than climate change.
Guess what? I just spotted a new review! π
Thank you SO much, Cindy Lea π

We've added 4.2 million new humans since 01.01.2026 π
A single human needs 1,000-4,000m2 for #food depending on diet (vegan to Standard American Diet).
4.2 million X 2,000m2 = 8,330 km2 or 833,000 ha in 19 days.
There isn't much primary #forest left and yet we break new deforestation records.
Speed, if you know what I mean.
I think it's called scabious, but you'll probably know better than me. Not a particularly pretty name for a lovely flower!
You're most welcome Penny π Your posts often brighten my days. Let's keep sharing!
We're all a-frayed.
Have a dose on me π
A little patch of wilderness where I live. It's home not just to me and my partner but also to countless trees, plants, insects, birds and animals. It's a sanctuary where we can watch nature all around us and regain a little sanity far from the madding crowds.
The more his unchecked power goes to his head and the further he descends into madness, corruption and senility, the question becomes: how far will he be allowed to go and how long will this be allowed to continue before those in a position to stop him say "enough"? It's already too far & too long.
Happy new year, Lily!

So true. And I didn't know about Murray Bookchin, so I've just been reading about him - thanks!
How wonderful! It's the best feeling when you realise that your words are helping to inspire and stimulate young minds.
I love your posts, Penny. And the responses to this one have reminded me that there are other like-minded people in the world. People who care. People who see what's happening. People who cherish the beauty & balance & peace of nature, and who find vital solace and sanctuary there. Thank you all! π

What does it say under his own portrait? Deranged egotistical narcissistic megalomaniac with delusions of grandeur? No, he'll probably build a new gold-plated extension just to house his description of how he's like TOTES the BEST PRESIDENT EVER. π€¦ββοΈ If he wasn't so dangerous he'd be hilarious.
I'd love everyone to understand the complexity of why.
I'd settle for everyone understanding the simplicity of why.
