In many of the ways we measure 'the good life' β health, work-life balance, faith in government β the US is falling short. And not just a little bit. Over and over, data show it performing substantially worse than similar countries.
I call it the American Outlier.

As we get into the final parts of the amazing meeting that #TIBS2026 was, a reminder to follow and share the starter pack for ECRs in Biogeography:

And a reminder to check it again, as we've had many new additions over the conference.
See you all at the dinner!
Or the other way around. Both narratives are valid. The question really is what do we value. Nature? Then some habitats need active protection from us. We can't simply use a laizzes-faire approach in those cases :)
π Weβre looking for a Juan de la Cierva candidate!
Our #iEcoEvoLab is seeking an early-career researcher to apply with us to the Juan de la Cierva 2025 call. If you work on island plant biogeography and conservation, weβd love to hear from you! ποΈπΏπ

Pleased that Jason Pither and I had our paper published in NeoBiotaβs 100th issue and highlighted in their blog post celebrating this milestone in invasion science! ππ
Plantations of alien trees aren't great. Period. Plenty of research says otherwise. That said, contrasting the understory it's not necessarily shows that - temperate rainforest are wet and have a lush understory, not so dry, acidic forests

Wildfires are getting worse β and a lot more expensive for the rest of us.

π΅οΈ Today's #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Broussonetia papyrifera, the Paper Mulberry.
π² This plant is a swift coloniser of disturbed areas, including forests.
π It can form extensive, dense stands through spreading root systems, and its pollen is highly allergenic.

So excited that my Tansley Insight "On the role of mutualisms in plant biogeography: consequences for ecology, evolution, and invasion" is out today!! @newphyt.bsky.social
π¨ New paper out!
Invasion science needs a reproducibility shake-up.
Our assessment reveals major gaps in transparency, power, and access to data/code.
We lay out concrete steps for researchers, journals, and policymakers.

They always try to pull something like this, locally or nationally, and it's always - guess who?- right wing parties.
The Italian government celebrates Biodiversity Day in its own way, with a bill on hunting:
It could be practiced during the months of reproduction and nesting of birds (when it is now prohibited), in state-owned areas (including beaches), with decoy birds, and much more:
