We do this to invoke Christ wrapped in the tomb after death, & his physical absence after being taken off the cross; a brief period we cannot physically see him. This elevates our penance, creates an atmosphere of mourning, and generates deeper anticipation to seeing him again come the Resurrection

As we are in Lent, moving towards the Resurrection, let us keep patience to soon rejoice in the eternal life of all granted by Christ. Blessed are we all, like St. Polycarp, to one day rest in peace and rise in glory.

Blessed Ash Wednesday. Today we remember "that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return." We’re given the sign of the cross in ashes on our foreheads, made from last year’s palm crosses of Holy Week. Let us meditate on our sins & on our deaths, our death in Christ & our death when we see God
