Historic images of Naser El-Din Shah Qajar (r 1848-1896) and the Pahlavi royal family in the Grand Hall of Golestan Palace
But Golestan Palace is most famed for its mirrored tilework. In the Safavid era, mirrors imported from Europe often arrived in shards. Rather than discarding broken mirrors, Iran's crafstmen developed this unique architectural element. Much of it now appears damaged.

Originally built by the Safavids, Goletan Palace was expanded during the Qajar era. It's characterized by detailed tilework on the exteriors and interior walls.

As I read about neighborhoods bombed in Iran, I've been thinking about its historic sites. News today that Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dating to the 16th c was hit.
Read βNone of this has been thought through very carefully.β And thought it was about the war
His logic was covert ops are cheaper than wars with warships & rockets. Kermit Roosevelt who ran the coup traveled to Iran with $100k, drank gin & limes poolside for much of the coup, & picked Sinatraβs Luck Be a Lady as Project Ajaxβs theme song.
Historical context: It was also Dwight D. Eishenhower whose CIA joined British intelligence to lead a coup in Iran in 1953, the US' first regime change. In 1954, a consortium of US oil companies got a 40% stake of Iranian oil.
Family and friends back home (Dubai) did not sleep a wink. Explosions are heard every 30min, and theyβre no longer far off. Strikes seem random, too. Kids are having it worse. My niece woke up to the sounds and threw up.
Thinking of kids back home. In Iran, Gaza and Sudan. All of them precious.
Two headlines tell a storyβ¦
No tears shed for the loss of that dude.
The US government's first regime change was the 1953 coup in Iran. Many view this as a turning point in both countries. Iran may have lost its last opportunity to establish a democratic government. And some in US came to view covert operations to overturn foreign govts as a valid political tool.
