I dunno, I think MIDI is cool - semi straight-forward for non-tech people and flexible for common needs. Now that firmware/patch management is via USB, SysEx is probably rarely used by average people. I doubt most people care about higher CC res or microtonality, but there's NRPN/MPE for those uses.
