Really interesting talk by @josephwilk.net at @pmstudiouk.bsky.social today

It's about using data from RightMove to show how people with disabilities are let down by the rental market, using visualisation and game engines in creative and impactful ways

Really enjoyed listening to this. This thread of local multiplayer design was really having a moment early in my career, and was very influential to me.
Even my clown shows today are motivated by what local multiplayer taught me in 2011-2014 π§‘

Interactive Ballet at SCRiTCH Cabaret - Mademoiselle Cafetière - 11 May 2025
YouTube video by Alistair Aitcheson
Still super proud of my interactive ballet act π
I get the audience to draw pictures on their phones during the act, which become the prompts I interpret as dance moves on stage

Every time I do it I'm always surprised what the audience will come up with π

In the opening the mermaid is swimming through the ocean looking for a present for her handsome prince, and she sings about the things she finds.
I'd say the average age was about 50 and they made a lot of cardboard cocks-and-balls π Wye Valley, don't ever change ππβ¨

Me, dressed as a clown mermaid, sat in front of a fireplace with my Pierce Brosnan dummy, dressed as a prince, sat on my lap π
Had an amazing time as a mermaid performing for Koselig Cabaret - an amazing variety night in a tent by a lake with a roaring fire!
They didn't have a projector so I got the audience to make objects with toilet roll tubes and gaffer tape to inspire my opening song π

Meanwhile because the parents are also nostalgic for a more analogue time they see all the cardboard props and are excited by them.
The kids are more trusting of their parents' taste because games is a *shared* interest now. So they get excited too.

Ah, so today's parents are comfortable with technology so it's no longer a divide between parent and child.
Like we no longer have the parent saying "I don't understand video games but my kid loves them" and the kid saying "no, that's not the video games I like!" Yeah, I can see that :)

I honestly don't know but I'm really curious about it. I'd love to believe that there is a growing cultural and creative openness in early years, flying totally under the radar because we always focus on teen and adult culture.
Is it real? No idea! But wouldn't it be lovely!

... but how would I know if there aren't a zillion descendants of Art Attack out there in children's media now that I just don't see because I'm not 9 anymore? Or maybe it's not specifically DIY but just a general openness to culture in that age group?

After all, Roblox is huge and doesn't that allow you to make and share your own games? Scratch has been in primary schools for over a decade. I lament that Art Attack with Neil Buchanan is no longer a thing...

Like, I often worry that culture has become more "take what you are given." That audiences want their familiar brands and recognisable genres. And maybe that's actually more the attitude of my own generation. I'm 38 - how would I know what the cultural attitudes of a child are?

... whereas now I see an apprehensive child and I'm confident: "they'll have a blast once this gets started."
But it would be nice to believe that the change is because there's an emerging DIY spirit in that age group. It's an alt-ctrl game show clearly made on a DIY budget after all!
