I've not seen it, any good?
Reading 2001 got me back into sci-fi so I went back and re-watched 12 Monkeys, A Scanner Darkly, and found this gem in my watchlist:
Prospect (2018)
What's the future gonna be like for normal people? Scavenging to make a living, and trying to reach a connecting space ship to go home

The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson book cover
#8
The Killer Inside Me
Jim Thompson 1952
Lou Ford destroys his life and kills those who love him.
I've seen Jim Thompson movie adaptations before (Grifters, After Dark) but this is the first book I've read. I did enjoy it but not sure it's a masterpiece as I've seen it described
The New York Trilogy (1987) by Paul Auster
#6, 7, and 8 as this is The New York Trilogy (1987) by Paul Auster.
Three books/stories:
City of Glass
Ghosts
The Locked Room
Identity, surveillance, detective procedural, how we exist only through watching others or being watched.
These were great stories, and I read the trilogy in 5 days

Book on a table - 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke 1968

2001: A Space Odyssey
Arthur C. Clarke 1968
It's been about 15 years since I last saw the film, and I recently learned that the book supposedly answered some questions about the ambiguous ending.
A great read, I'm loving sf at the moment. The HAL chapters more relevant than ever
It really represents the culture of the area, and a lot of artists have helped to breathe new life into rural places like Kouhu
I'd seen this driftwood before, but this was my first time to look closely and realise there are actually bark carvings in it. They are subtle like silhouettes so easy to miss
The artwork is by Katherina Eckert, who it seems is an artist living in Taichung
The location is Kouhu in Yunlin
Spending some time in rural Taiwan for the new year
Found another robot, this time holding two persimmons, at Taiwan Sugar in Chiayi
The book cover for Surveillance and Film by J Mcgregor Wise

Surveillance and Film
By J. Macgregor Wise
An in-depth look of how surveillance is portrayed in films, and also what that means for society.
The middle chapter on surveillance societies was particularly interesting.
That's enough film studies for now, but my next book has been a film...
I wonder if there's still a record of the other entries?
It looks like the alt text on a video isn't shown in the Bluesky UI so, for those wondering -
this is the pixel animation that shows on pedestrian crossings in Taiwan for a green light

The book Cult Film As a Guide To Life by I.Q. Hunter
#3
Cult Film As A Guide To Life
I.Q. Hunter, 2016
A very academic look at what cult means, what makes a cult film, the difference (similarity) been adaptation and exploitation, and a whole chapter on Showgirls.
A good read if you're a 'trash aesthete'
The Surrogates probably should've been first on the list, since it was finished this year and graphic novels count as books

Famicom controller universal TV remote
Famicom controller universal TV remote
I bought this Famicom controller universal TV remote in Japan in 2006.
Every few years I dig this out and have no idea how to reprogram it. The only guide I can find is a a 17 year old 240p Youtube video, so here it is:
1. Press A
2. Press B and Left for 5 seconds
3. When the TV turns off, press A
A little bit of both
Did you buy it?
It looks like there's a few variations, too
Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe jigsaw puzzle box on a table surrounded by jigsaw pieces
Started a new jigsaw puzzle
1000 piece Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
This looks really interesting!
My first thought was a replacement to using SMB to access my Linux server via Mac OS (which has terrible performance), but there's a lot of possibilities for this

The robot statues at MLDε°ιηζ΄»εε ΄ are really impressive. There are three Transformer style robots on the first floor and a Stormtrooper upstairs, each at least 8ft tall

Which famiclone is it?
I was hoping the Bears were gonna make it further this year

I'm sure a lot of these still worked, but the Taiwanese climate isn't friendly to plastic
Cover of the book 'Sparky: The Life and Art of Charles Schulz'
Pages 70 and 71 from the book 'Sparky: The Life and Art of Charles Schulz'
Pages 50 and 51 from the book 'Sparky: The Life and Art of Charles Schulz'
Time to start a book thread for 2026
First book (I'm starting late)...
Sparky: The Life and Art of Charles Schulz
Yes, it's a young readers book, so only a surface-level look at his life, but you can finish it in one sitting. I've always enjoyed Peanuts, and previously had no background on Schulz
