Design parodying a shirt worn by Mark Ashton who was an activist during the 1980’s in the United Kingdom. Mark was a founding member of LGSM which was a gay and lesbian group that supported a miner’s strike in Wales from 1984-85. My parody of this design says “Labors and Queers” followed by “Lesbians and gay men and bisexuals and trans folks support the working class 2025 to infinity”. The design is heavily distressed and shows an illustration of three people standing in front of an American flag. There is pink color blocking throughout. The design is white, black and pink. On the far right there is a mock-up of a figure wearing this on a tshirt.
I was reminded of Mark Ashton’s legacy today and this shirt caught my eye. This bootleg design is, at its best, an homage to great LGBTQ+ designers or, at it’s worst, a cheap knock off that coopts a powerful movement that I have little personal connection to. I hope it’s received as the former.
