A traffic violence story doesn't get more American than this.

A man whose wife was killed crossing the street advocated for a signal and was later killed at the same intersection himself.

Neighbors have been asking for a traffic signal there for 40(!) years.

Been interesting trying to suss out the value of AI for various customer-facing domains--Sales, Marketing, Customer Care, Ecommerce etc--and have concluded for now that the most initial benefits can be found in Product. Perhaps also fewest downsides, tho curious about your list of disappointments...

Can’t say for sure, but experience in my somewhat coddled east coast suburban community suggests that they fear anyone of notably lower or higher class than them. And they will assume people of color to be the former until proven otherwise.

I hear ya on the impact to local bookstores. Personally I've made my peace with any alternative to Amazon... Also something of a convert after discovering a newish & nicely-urbanized community in VA where the central (very walkable) commercial area was more or less anchored by a successful B&N.

Photo of candidates onstage at the California YIMBY gubernatorial forum

The clear winner of today’s @cayimby.bsky.social gubernatorial forum was the YIMBY movement itself.

That every major candidate showed up, cited a lack of supply as the primary driver of the housing crisis, & offered actual policy solutions is a true testament of how strong the movement has become.

I just did the dumbest thing of my entire career to prove a much more serious point.

I tricked ChatGPT and Google, and made them tell other users I’m a competitive hot-dog-eating world champion

People are using this trick on a massive scale to make AI tell you lies. I’ll explain how I did it

It's not a new observation at this point but that wild Noem/Lewandowski story in WSJ really brings home the extent to which all the Trump 2 cabinet-level goblins see their jobs as flying private, doing short-form video, and screaming at underlings. They all hate each other and none of them can read.

When I worked for Reason magazine during Trump's rise to power in 2016, I was explicitly forbidden by the editor in chief from writing about Trump's racism, or the violence and racism at his rallies.

It was a "sideshow," I was told.

Sens. Cruz, Cornyn File Amicus Brief Backing Texas’ Emergency Application to Implement New Congressional Map
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights, and John Cornyn (R-Texas) filed an amicus brief in support of the State of Texas’ emergency application to the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay of the district court injunction that barred Texas from implementing its new congressional district map. The Senators did so in part on the basis of the Purcell principle, which holds that courts should not change election rules shortly before an election.

Sen. Cruz said, β€œThe Constitution entrusts redistricting matters to the states and to state legislators. The federal district court’s preliminary injunction was not made on the merits of the case, runs counter to precedent and to principles of federalism, and undermines the prerogatives of Texas lawmakers and the will of Texas voters. The Supreme Court should stay that preliminary injunction, and do so expeditiously in order to provide certainty in our election maps and rules as we approach deadlines for the 2026 election.”

Newsweek: Ted Cruz has proposed that Texas extend the state's Republican advantage in the U.S. House of Representatives to a full Democratic wipeout if Gavin Newsom goes ahead with a proposal to redraft congressional maps in his state in response to a similar plan by Republicans in Texas.

47% of VA voted Trump. They will now get just 9% of the seats.

52% of VA voters voted Harris. Now they get 91% of the seats.

(By comparison, in TX, 56% voted Trump; GOP gets 79% of the seats.)

Like his Confederate forebears, Ted Cruz talked a big game, started a fight, got absolutely dog walked, then cried about how unfair it all was. A story in four images.
