Because when I look at the debate now unfolding in Spain — a debate framed in the confident vocabulary of liberation, prohibition and public order — I cannot help but think back to that classroom in Sana’a and the dozens of young women who navigated a world far more restrictive than anything Europe could imagine. I remember how some of them laughed loudly and without apology, even removing their masks once the classroom door closed. I remember how others argued fiercely over grammar exercises, over politics, over whether they should apply for scholarships abroad.
