Color photograph of British mountaineer Alison Hargreaves (1962β1995), pioneering alpine climber and the first woman to summit Mount Everest solo without supplementary oxygen or Sherpa support. She stands smiling broadly at the camera on a snowy high-altitude mountainside, with dramatic jagged peaks and glaciers rising behind her under a clear blue sky. She wears a bright green Sprayway expedition jacket with a prominent 'SPRAYWAY' patch on the chest, a dark neck gaiter or collar, a purple inner layer, and a dark blue or black headband. Sunglasses hang from a strap around her neck, and she has short, wind-tousled brown hair, conveying strength, joy, and determination amid a vast, rugged alpine landscape.
Alison Hargreaves was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest solo, unaided, and without bottled oxygen (1995).
She was also the first person (man or woman) to solo the six "great north faces" of the Alps in a single summer season (1993). She was born #OTD in 1962. #mountaineering
