Went to see the great exhibit on the Sussex Lancers gay motorbike club of the 1990s - loads of lovely archival material & also a treasure trove of name-spotting (people & places) for fans of Brighton's LGBTQ history.

At the Brighton & Hove Museum now!

Our new Queer and Trans Histories series creates a home for cutting‑edge work on past and present LGBTQ+ lives.

We’re looking for proposals grounded in rich empirical work and innovative approaches to intimacy, emotion, silence, and subjectivity.

The history of LGBT+ rights is inseparable from the history of its criminal law.

To mark LGBT+ History Month, Trainee Solicitor, Louisa Reddin explores the legal milestones that have shaped LGBT+ rights in the UK.

A reflection on progress, legacy and ongoing challenges.

The Deepest View Ever Obtained of Centaurus A (NGC 5128)
New improved version with 10 hours of H-Alpha, Sep 2019
In 2013 I gathered 120 hours of data on Centaurus A, and processed the deepest image ever obtained of this magnificent galaxy showing many features and structures not revealed by amateurs before.
In Feb 2014 I released an improved version of the image with higher resolution, processed using PixInsight.
Then in 2018 I again acquired further data (for what is evidently a never-ending project…), this time in the H-Alpha wavelength. This new re-processed image incorporates the H-Alpha data in order to highlight the impressive emission structures triggered by the relativistic jet from the supermassive central black hole. It also emphasises the many pink hydrogen clouds in the dark dust lane across the centre of the galaxy, and lastly I feel the image showcases the concentric shells and rich background slightly better, while keeping a reasonably subtle natural look.

About the Image
This image is the realisation of a long time dream of mine: Taking a deep sky image with more than 100 hours of exposure.
I set out on this mission in early 2013 and after having gathered 130 hours of data on 46 different nights in 2013 and 2018 I present what I believe is the deepest view ever obtained of Centaurus A. This is likely also the deepest image ever taken with amateur equipment, showing stars as faint as magnitude 25.45.
I spent around 40 hours and analysing processing the data...

We've loved going back to the past for LGBT+ History Month, but it's vital we also keep building a future where no LGBT+ person who experiences abuse and violence is left without access to support.

Here's how we're working towards that future ⬇️

Screenshot of QueerAF article, headline reads: What Trans+ kids say about draft education guidance that could force schools to segregate them. By Sasha Baker - Queer investigative reporter - They/Them - Queer, nonbinary, bisexual, neurodivergent, chronically ill, Jewish

Draft education guidance could force schools to exclude Trans+ children from toilets and changing rooms - raising barriers to social transition at school.

It splits policies into β€œmust” do and β€œshould” dos.

It leaves room for Teachers to be Trans+ supportive (but only if they do the paperwork) πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡

One of the challenges of #LGBTHistory is terminology. #Gay wasn't commonly used as an alternative to homosexual until the 1950s so 18th and 19th century uses have a very different definition, as many letters in our collection illustrate #Context
