If anyone is friends with any Georgian air traffic controllers, buy them a nice bottle of wine. As guardians of pretty much the only narrow gap still available between Europe and Asia that avoids both Iran, the Gulf, Ukraine and Russia, they are under some substantial pressure.

What's fascinating to me after reading a bunch of the Epstein files emails from all kinds of senior figures from all kinds of countries is just how many of them were randomly telling Epstein state secrets over unsecured, unencrypted email, and nobody's security services bothered with it AT ALL.

At a yalda celebration tonight. We have eaten, danced and drunk tea and now people are reading from the book of poetry for guidance towards the new year. It has been a while and I have missed the sounds of Farsi. I have almost no understanding of it but have always loved the sound of it.

Religion note: Remember that pastor who was arrested protesting an ICE detention facility outside Chicago recently? The one who was photographed on the ground as officers arrested him?

That's Rev. Michael Woolf, and this is his church.

Just listened to Josh Johnson, on a daily show clip, eloquently point out that yes there is a difference but there never a good situation when you have to make that that distinction

one function of capitalism is to funnel these types into positions of power, because if competent & kind people get into power they start taking from the rich and giving to the poor. capitalist leaders must be either evil or ignorant or both, only by mistake does anyone else get near power

This is the type of thing I believed in my teenage years. I then spent fifteen years or so thinking it was massively more complex and nuanced and also humdrum than this, and now - having watched this shitshow for about thirty five years - I have concluded that I was correct when I was about 17.

Discord says users' government IDs used for age checks stolen by hackers Thanks to age verification laws, expect more data breaches of users' government-issued passports and driver's licenses.

Discord said late on Friday that hackers stole users' government-issued IDs (passports and driver's licenses) from one of its customer support databases.

I wrote a few words about the risks of age verification laws, and why collecting people's government IDs is bad for security and privacy.

One question facing business on the double-bind of AI and data If Australian enterprises become dependent on foreign-controlled systems trained on Australian intelligence, we create an enormous strategic vulnerability.

Excellent op-ed by #CSIRO Chair @mingylong.bsky.social and Deputy CEO, Professor Elanor Huntington on #SovereignAI and the double bind of #data and #AI.

The more business uses foreign-owned #LLMs such as ChatGPT and Claude, the more training data we're giving them.

AI experts return from China stunned: The U.S. grid is so weak, the race may already be over — FORTUNE China is “set up to hit grand slams,” longtime Chinese energy expert David Fishman told Fortune. “The U.S., at best, can get on base.”

The stakes are difficult to overstate. Data center building is the foundation of AI advancement, and spending on new centers now displaces consumer spending in terms of impact to U.S. GDP—that’s concerning since consumer spending is generally two-thirds of the pie.
