ICE arrests of people without criminal records surge in Virginia
The shift came soon after the Trump administration tripled ICE's arrest quota.
MOST people in our region arrested by ICE have no criminal charges or convictions. Trumpβs mass deportation scheme is targeting law-abiding, hardworking people, disrupting our economy, and not making our community safer.

D.C. elected these noncitizens to office. Congress could oust them.
Congress is considering repealing a law that allows noncitizens to vote in local elections in D.C. β which could in turn disqualify noncitizens from office.
MΓ³nica MartΓnez LΓ³pez ran for ANC because she loves her community - its shared spaces, neighbors, and everyday moments of connection. She's a bridge-builder, a fierce advocate, and a friend Iβm proud to support. Congress has no right to erase her. #HandsOffDC www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

If you're a D.C. Library user, be aware: The D.C. Public Library system says it is likely going to have to reduce opening hours at neighborhood branches, from the current 61 hours a week to 40 hours. Branches would also go from being open seven days a week to five days.

#DYK? Metro is good for your health. People who ride transit walk as much as 30 minutes more a day, increasing heart health, building muscle, and reducing risk of heart disease. Take Metro on this #NationalExerciseDay!

Community Resilience Collective
We are hosting a community-driven event where neighbors can learn and share skills to navigate and thrive in todayβs political environment. Skills shares like this help support resilient, empowered communities, providing practical knowledge on navigating government bureaucracy, accessing public services, and securing basic necessities. While this event is focused on Takoma neighbors, it is open to anyone interested in attending.
Date: March 29; 3-5 PM
Location: Rhizome (6950 Maple Street, NW)
How It Works:
Fill out this form to offer your skills or request an opportunity to learn new skills. We will match the skills offered to the requests and invite those offering relevant services to set up a table before the event (on or around March 8). While not all skills will be needed for this event, we will keep a running list for future events, opportunities, and needs. *Your contact information will not be shared beyond organizing this event. We will only contact you for purposes of this or a related event.*
Desired Skills Topics (Suggestions):
Navigating Government Systems: ID/passport applications, city services
Protecting Public Health: finding a doctor/medical practice, vaccine appointments, reducing lead exposure
Housing Security: eviction defense, tenant rights, reporting building code violations
Financial Resilience: budgeting, job preparation
Community Engagement/Advocacy: voter registration, testifying, using social media for change
Emergency Preparedness: emergency kits, plans
Building Collective Power: forming a union, forming a tenant association, community organizing
Caring for Community: supporting mutual aid, senior villages, community care networks
Feel free to offer or request skills beyond these suggestions that could benefit the community! Even if they are not requested for this specific event, they are likely to be needed at another time.
This event is organized by Takoma neighbor, Erin Palmer.
Join us for a skills share on Mar 29, 3-5pm @ Rhizome (6950 Maple St, NW)! Skills offered: health, housing, finance, emergency prep & more.
We still need:
π Unemployment Insurance
π Food Access
π» Tech Support

G.O.P. Spending Bill Would Force $1 Billion Cut to D.C. Budget
Republicans omitted a standard provision approving the Districtβs budget in a stopgap funding measure needed to avert a shutdown before the end of the week. The result would be a 16 percent cut.
For those who donβt understand the challenge of living in DC. Thereβs no other municipality in the country for which Congress can invalidate a balanced full year budget passed by the peopleβs elected representatives, and halfway into the fiscal year at that. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/10/w...
