I suppose my point here is that the Labour government has already introduced wealth taxes.
If you really want to tax wealth then you need to tax things those with money want to buy or canβt avoid eg. Private school fees, property, inheritance, dividends, or even private jets βοΈ
That doesnβt mean you shouldnβt impose a wealth tax on the basis of fairness. But in doing so you need to accept that the total tax take may end up going down rather than up - or at the very least wonβt raise as much as you think. π
But the idea that you should base your national spending by taxing a small number of people who can easily move is not a reliable or secure way of ensuring ongoing funding for public services.
These people can just move or restructure their assets π§ 3/
Taxes of this kind or other windfall taxes can be a useful tool to collect funds for one off costs (pandemics, defence, wealth funds etc) where there isnβt the time or mechanisms to avoid such a tax. β° 2/
Like all Labour members I think the wealthiest should contribute the most.
And I am generally supportive of wealth taxes from a fairness perspective.
But when itβs proposed as a simple solution to the spending shortfall - thatβs when I lose interest. π€·ββοΈ 1/
π¨ NEW: Opportunities for the poorest young people in London far outstrip the rest of England, we have found.

I think the language was badly chosen & have written a piece (forthcoming) on why. Starmer did not quote Enoch Powell. He did use the word 'strangers'. Powell used this word too. They made different arguments using the word. The idea it was an intentional echo is highly implausible & 99.99999% not
Last week there was talk of Reform getting almost 50% in Runcorn. Labour vote held up relatively well, with Reform mainly benefiting from the collapse of the Tory vote.
Not clearly highlighted here is that 55% of the welfare budget is spent on pensioners, over 42% on the state pension alone.

I mean - the principle is more direct in health when you consider itβs the general population (rather than those with certain conditions or experts) that rate the values of different health states that are then used for QALY calculations.
Agreed. But I also see that those paying for the system ie. Taxpayers, need to have confidence in the system to ensure long term buy in and support for the welfare state in principle. Risk otherwise is you leave space for populists/political opportunists to find excuses to start dismantling it
Or if you start studying FT. Little to no support for postgraduates with childcare but also not eligible for the full 30 hoursβ¦
Some refer to the environment created by the social and wider determinants of health as an iatrogenic environment but Iβm not sure thatβs the term youβre referencing?
Plans for integration of employment and mental health support into NHS care as well as a βright to tryβ scheme are very welcome.
There has been a huge increase in those struggling with their mental health and investment in prevention and supporting people to work should obviously be a priority.
I wouldnβt say scrapping NHS England is particularly βrightwardβ tbh.
Given online reaction it seems thereβs a need to clarify that scrapping NHS England isnβt the same as scrapping the NHS IN England π€¦ββοΈ

π¨ NEW: Only a fraction of medical students come from working class backgrounds, despite recent efforts to widen access.
Our new research finds persistent issues with access to careers in medicine, as working-class people remain hugely underrepresented in the profession π§΅β¬οΈ
Also the obvious answer is for the RFU to start doing its job and getting state schools playing rugby. Dependency on private school pupils was entirely avoidable.
It is possible to recognise the political reality and acknowledge defense spending needs to rise whilst also knowing international development is immensely valuable, important, and ultimately beneficial to all parties and feel sad and frustrated that it's being cut.
Reform currently has zero (0) MPs in the chamber for the statement on defence spending.

To be clear itβs not a tax on savings. Itβs a tax on unearned income (the interest) people gain by being in a position to save money.
