I'll be real, it's very annoying to see Owen's deal in End of the Line being treated as a "twist". It wasn't a twist and wasn't meant as a "haha, you fool" aimed at readers. It's just a definitive explanation for why he wasn't a love interest and never would be, to serve the themes of the story.
