The sensory experience of social media is like a kaleidoscope—but instead of looking from afar at a focal point around which the infinite iridescent tessellations hatch, you are the focal point. Social media is an effective control method because it makes you feel omniscient at very little cost.

Feeling some ambiguity about the first part of this—it's not that I haven't searched out other faiths or tried to return to my own. I've been an ardent spiritual nomad; that's far more intrinsic to my being than a proper-noun Religion.

Although I have not been part of any faith in my adult life, I was proud of being Muslim as a kid. It's nice to see people outside the faith wishing Muslims a good Ramadan, normalizing that type of exchange. The 9/11 years taught me to hide that part of me, and that training is automatic these days.
