Right now I am joining colleagues @ucunorthumbria.bsky.social on picket. I should be preparing for a seminar today on barricade fighting and 1848. Do you know how *hard* it is for me to not be doing this session?! Thatβs how much we care about this action in defence of pensions, pay, and bargaining.

[KCON 2016 FranceΓM COUNTDOWN] Opening Performance _ Arirang Medley(μ리λ μ°κ³‘) M COUNTDOWN 160614 EP.47
YouTube video by Mnet K-POP
Today is Samiljeol (March 1st), Koreaβs Independence Movement Day.
So Iβm sharing #BTS performing βArirang.β
#Arirang isnβt just βtraditional.β Itβs a song Koreans have carried through grief, separation, and resistance.
It holds #history inside it, even when no one explains the footnotes.

Definitely a lovely thing for the kids, it just felt like they were separated from the main action and atmosphere.

Cover of book with text in yellow reading: The Firearm Revolution: From Renaissance Italy to the European Empires, overlaid on an image of an angel in seventeenth-century dress with wings and a long gun.
Hello Bluesky! My new book, THE FIREARM REVOLUTION, is out on 14 April. Itβs about how a new technology changed society, and how hard it was to control. Hereβs a little thread of whatβs inside:

The film literally shows in the first few minutes how he was savagely beaten by the headmaster at school because he could not control his vocal tics.
Iβm not sure what value system goes immediately βthis disabled man must be excluded from an awards ceremony film about his lifelong exclusion.β

Someone very close to me has Touretteβs; thank god nonverbal. It is still the most embarrassing & stigmatised condition.
Those up in arms about a man with Touretteβs involuntarily shouting a racial slur at the BAFTAs need to take a hard look at your own bigotry.
They. Canβt. Stop. It.
So upset.

Ah, I haven't read the novel but I'm familiar with the general plot from seeing a stage adaptation. No - it only adapts the first half, and there are characters missing/changed. It tries to make Heathcliff more of a romantic figure.

I'd say boring, definitely, and I felt the leads were miscast. I also wasn't a fan of much of the aesthetics.

Off to see "Wuthering Heights".
Perk of my cinema card: if I hate it it's ok cause I technically haven't paid for it.

Marie Antoinette Style at the V&A. Photo of a dress in a glass case, with reflections of other cases and bright lights seen. The dress has a tiny waist and big skirt. It is a French-style court gown of silver brocaded silk, worn by Duchess Hedwig Elisabeth Charlotta at her own wedding.
White and pink silk dress worn by Kirsten Dunst in the film Marie Antoinette. Designed by Milena Canonero.
Marie Antoinette Style at the V&A β¨οΈ
Loved the Hall of Mirrors-influenced design, and the soft subtlety of the mannequin wigs which allowed the dresses to shine.
It's actually embarrassing that I've never watched the Sofia Coppola film, I need to rectify that.
